A fine knock of 80 in 88 balls inclusive of six boundaries and three sixes by skipper Shevon Daniel and a fine allround performance by Dunith Wellalage supported by Sadeesh Jayawardena helped St. Joseph’s College to record a comfortable 106 runs victory over Richmond College, Galle in the final of the Under 19 Tier ‘A’ inter- schools limited over tournament played at the Police Park yesterday.
The easy win saw the Josephians who are the defending champions successfully retaining the title for the second successive year.
The match got off to a late start was curtailed to 47 overs a side with the Josephians taking first lease of the wicket was steered by skipper Daniel who put on two valuable partnerships first of 57 runs for the second wicket with Sadeesh Jayawardena who made 46 and the other of 86 runs for the fourth wicket with Wellalage who chipped in with 42 to help them post a formidable score of 257 fir 9.
Richmond in their run chase had an inauspicious start when they lost their first wicket in the first ball. They fell into deep trouble when they lost four quick wickets and was struggling on 63 for 5 in the 22nd over. Left with a daunting task of making a further 194 runs in the remaining 25 overs they failed to achieve the feat despite a knock of 62 coming from Malsha Tharupathi as they were bowled out for 151 runs.
