Former cricket umpire and President, Association of Cricket Umpires Sri Lanka (ACUSL) Saman Amarasinghe passed away yesterday and his funeral took place on the same day according to Covid-19
health regulations.
The late Amarasinghe was a distinguished old boy of Royal College, Colombo and later he did a fine service as a teacher at his school and was also involved in various sports events at different capacities.
He was a former Master-in-Charge of cricket, boxing, basketball and rugby at Royal College.
He was also a talented sports Administrator and served the Sports Ministry after retiring from Royal.
He was the former Secretary General of the Sports Council of Sri Lanka Schools and at the Ministry of Education and was the founder Chairman of the Presidential Sports Awards and was the first Sports Ombudsman at the Presidential Sports Awards. In addition, he was a former Chairman of the National Sports Council of Ministry of Sports.
The late Amarasinghe had a good knowledge about cricket umpiring and worked as an instructor and a match referee.
He was the one time Director of the National Youth Service Council, Maharagama and later he was appointed Chairman and Director at the National Sports Museum of the Sports Ministry.
