The Sri Lanka Weightlifting Federation (SLWF) has decided to conduct a selection trial on December 17 and 18 in Polonnaruwa targeting a series of international events in 2022.
SLWF Secretary G. Nishanthan said that they are conducting the trials in preparation for the Asian Youth and Senior Championships, Commonwealth Games, Asian Games, Asian Championships, World Championships and the Youth World Championships.
The SLWF is planning to start training for the competitors in the elite pool, national pool, youth pool and junior pool from January 2022.
Already there are 13 competitors in the elite pool and over 50 competitors in the national pool and out of them, with changes to the training pool after the trials.
The last two international events for the Sri Lankan weightlifters this year will be the World Championships and the Commonwealth Championships, scheduled for December 5-17 in Uzbekistan.
This meet will also serve as the final selection trial for the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England where Sri Lanka are hoping to field a 20-member weightlifting contingent.
