Defending national billiards champion Mohamed Thaha, representing Moors SC, got off to a flying start when he began his campaign in the 69th National Billiards Championship with a resounding win in his first match played at the BSASL headquarters billiards table in Independence Square, Colombo.
Thaha outclassed his clubmate A.F. Haniffa (474/271) in the 90-minute encounter, which incidentally was the highest score of the round-robin matches that were played on day one.
In the other matches played, Priyantha Samarakoon of Army BC emerged as champion of the two qualifying tournaments (Colombo District/All Island Lanka Plate), which were played before the nationals. He continued his winning streak by chalking up back-to-back wins, while last year runner-up Susantha Wickrama of Army BC too began his campaign on a winning note.
The championship will continue today.
