Youth discard Ryan slams second double ton

S. Thomas’ College skipper Ryan Fernando, who was overlooked for the Sri Lanka Under 19 tour to England later this month, continued his fine batting form when he slammed his second unbeaten double ton of the season, in their drawn Under 19 inter-school cricket encounter against Ananda College concluded at the SSC ground yesterday.


Fernando following his unbeaten knock of 252 against Isipathana College last month, with a quick-fire 176-ball unbeaten knock of 200 that included 31 boundaries and two sixes for the Thomians, who made a formidable score of 380 for 7 declared.


This was in reply to the Anandians’ score of 120 runs. Ananda batting the second time ended the day on 222 for 3 with man in form Nethma Karunaratne making an unbeaten 127.


Karunaratne in the process had the honor of becoming the first batsman to reach the magical 1,000-run mark for the season. Karunaratne achieved this feat from 13 matches with six half tons and three tons.


The match was played for the Halangoda-Atapattu Trophy which S. Thomas’ retained for the third successive year by virtue of a first innings win.
