SLT records Rs.1.6bn net profit for first quarter

The consolidated post tax profit of Sri Lanka Telecom PLC (SLT) rose 226 percent Year-on-Year (YoY) to Rs.1.6 billion, helped by foreign exchange gains.

The group has recorded Rs.14.45 billion in revenue, with 5 percent YoY growth during the quarter. SLT also posted an exchange gain of Rs.39
billion, against an exchange loss of Rs.1.4 billion in the corresponding quarter which eroded group profitability.

Strategic initiatives engaged particularly in the mobile sector together with the expansion of broadband and data services throughi-Sri Lanka program have complemented the growth of group revenue.

The revenue of SLT's mobile unit, Mobitel rose to Rs.6.6 billion during the quarter under review from Rs.6 billion in the same quarter of the previous year.

In line with increased profits, Group annualized earnings per share has been increased from Rs.1.09 in first quarter 2012 to Rs.3.55
