Shahili Gomes-McCoy and Binu Wickramasinghe, founders of The Design Collective, have been selected by Harrods in London to curate a special collection in celebration of South Asian Heritage Month. This exclusive, internal event for Harrods employees is set to take place this month (July 2024).
This collaboration highlights the richness of South Asian Heritage Month, which celebrates the eight countries of South Asia: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. South Asian Heritage Month (SAHM) was inaugurated in 2019 to honor the contributions of these communities. In 2024, SAHM will be celebrated in the UK from July 18th to August 17th, under the theme ‘Free to be Me,’ reflecting founding patron Anita Rani’s vision of empowering the next generation to take pride in their identities.
Harrods, London’s iconic luxury department store, renowned globally for its elegance and exclusivity, is hosting this event on July 18th. The invitation for The Design Collective to participate is a significant endorsement of the founders' vision. As Shahili Gomes-McCoy stated, “We are thrilled to bring the vibrancy and creativity of South Asian fashion to Harrods, a place where anything truly is possible.”
Since its inception in 2017, The Design Collective has become a premier platform for South Asian designers. The store, which features over 60 Sri Lankan and South Asian independent clothing and beauty brands, has established itself as the leading multi-brand concept store in Sri Lanka. With the launch of its e-commerce site, The Design Collective aims to showcase the best of Sri Lankan and South Asian fashion to a global audience. This collaboration with Harrods during South Asian Heritage Month epitomizes Shahili and Binu’s vision.
The event will feature three prominent brands from The Design Collective: ITR by Khyati Pande (India), Amna Chaudhry (Pakistan), and Dimuthu Sahabandu (Sri Lanka). Each brand will present five distinctive looks.
ITR by Khyati Pande (India): Known for minimal handcrafted wardrobe essentials, ITR combines print and fabric to create artful garments. The use of pure organza, printed Indian cotton, and meticulous detailing defines the brand’s commitment to mindful fashion.
Amna Chaudhry (Pakistan): This brand merges modesty with style, showcasing bold colors and intricate embroidery that reflect the vibrancy of South Asian culture. From casual wear to rich couture, Amna Chaudhry’s garments are meticulously crafted for an effortless yet precise fit.
Dimuthu Sahabandu (Sri Lanka): Blending Asian silhouettes with contemporary design, Dimuthu Sahabandu’s creations feature unique beadwork, sequins, and threadwork. The brand is celebrated for its custom couture that combines intricate craftsmanship with modern aesthetics.
These brands, with their South Asian color palettes, opulence, and feminine silhouettes, are a testament to the rich heritage and fashion prowess of the region. The Design Collective is excited to celebrate South Asian fashion with such remarkable talent during this special month.
