The Best Burger in Town!

Who doesn’t love a good burger and by all accounts the best in Colombo is the Sugar Burger. The Sugar Burger is simply the best burger in town, and rightfully so. It’s part of the Sugar family which includes Sugar Bistro, Sugar Beach, Kava and Merchants; all known for their excellent service and products. Sugar Burger brings you some of the most iconic burgers in town, like their other brands almost verging on cult status. It isn't exactly your typical street food / fast food burger, what Sugar Burger offers is a decadently delicious selection of gourmet Burgers at wallet friendly prices and you don’t find many of those in Colombo. My colleagues, Amantha and Thamod (who photographed everything you see), joined in to review the much-loved Sugar Burger offerings. A side note is that all the burger components are made in-house with prime ingredients to exacting standards, except for the ketchup, and each burger is so unique that you won’t find it anywhere else. Their menu is a burger junkies dream.

  Available through Uber Eats, the Sugar Burger packaging is great and shows promise for what’s inside. To start with, we had the Club Tropicana Burger which is a quarter pounder (chicken or beef, we had the beef) with melted cheese, grilled pineapple and a few strips of bacon, we ordered ours with Carrot Fries. I know, a bit too healthy to have with a burger but honestly, I was pleasantly surprised. The flavor was unexpected, the tempura batter on the fries was delicious and it was something new and interesting. On to the bburger, my head started nodding when I scored a unifying bite of everything it had to offer. The tang from the pineapple, the salt from the bacon, the savoriness of the beef and melted cheese, married with a hint of sweetness from the ketchup make for a flavor collaboration of epic proportions. A Burger is never complete without a Milkshake. So to complete the first meal of the day we had a Chocolate Milkshake which was one of the best Milkshakes I have had, richly satisfying chocolatey goodness.

  The second burger of the day was the Hot Bird Burger with Sweet Potato Jungle Fries, which is a Crispy Chicken Burger. They say you eat with your eyes first and my eyes said this burger was delicious. It isn't like your everyday Crispy Chicken Burger. Biting through the toasted but airy sesame bun, the crunch from the crispy chicken patty was both noticeable and welcome. This burger did not disappoint on the spice level and was a “Hot Bird” as promised. The toppings were minimal and didn’t distract from the main focus of the crispy chicken and that moreish siracha mayo, all in all pretty perfect. The sweet potato fries were soft, delicious and worked well.

  And now moving on to the final and probably my favorite of the day, The Classic. All burgers are offered in chicken or beef and can be ordered with a variety of buns from sesame seed to sour dough to the crusty tiger bun. We chose the beef and brioche to keep it all classic. This burger was simply masterful. I’ve enjoyed (read: eaten) a lot of burgers, but this was a burger that was an absolute joy to eat and it made me smile. Something about it is just so classic, but at the same time, carefully done. This is the first burger Sugar started off with and have refined it to near perfection. Remember in English class when they told you about the structure of a well-formed paragraph within a story or essay? It starts out with an introduction, continues on to the body and finishes with a conclusion? This burger was sort of like that!

Each flavor supported the next in a convincing dissertation on what makes a great burger. The soft brioche bun introduced you to a perfectly seasoned beef juicy burger. You get some spicy notes from the mustard balanced by creamy notes from the cheese and a bit of sharpness from the gherkins, each bite was moist and exciting. It easily took the crown for best burger for me. This burger will pleasantly haunt your thoughts and tastebuds long after you've had your first experience.

We weren’t done, far from it! For dessert we tried their brownie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. It was a hit of gooey chocolate goodness, a generous serving that went well with creamy vanilla ice- cream. And to end things off we got Churros with Chocolate sauce. Another generous portion of lightly sugared Churros with a rich and delicious chocolate sauce. Light and fluffy these were masterfully done and an absolute treat to eat.

For a truly satisfying burger experience that won’t break the bank and a menu that does not appear to have a wrong choice which also includes a crab burger and a well thought out veggie burger option, Sugar Burger hits all the right notes. Burger junkies and aficionados love this place for their unapologetically big flavor burgers and innovative sides, whether you’re a burger newbie or an expert, Sugar Burger will not disappoint and truly does live up to its “ best burger” reputation.
