Sri Lanka emerge runners-up at SA Junior Meet

Sri Lanka had to be content with the overall runners-up position for the third successive year in the third South Asian Junior Athletics Championships which concluded at the Sugathadasa Stadium yesterday.

The 84-member strong Sri Lankan contingent collected a total of 41 medals including 12 Gold Medals, 10 Silver Medals and 19 Bronze Medals.

India with a 56-member contingent, emerged overall champions of the two-day meet with a total of 50 medals including 20 Gold Medals, 22 Silver Medals and eight Bronze Medals.

Meanwhile, a total of 20 records were shattered at this meet with Sri Lanka establishing a total of four new meet records on the second day.

The Sri Lanka records were set by Shayamali Kumarasinghe (Women’s 800m), M. P. C. Kodikara (Men’s 400m hurdles), Sri Lanka Women’s 4X400, Relay Team and the Sri Lanka Men’s 4X400m Relay Team.

At the inaugural meet held in Colombo in 2007, Sri Lanka bagged eight Gold Medals, eight Silver Medals and 18 Bronze Medals.

India won 21 Gold Medals, 19 Silver Medals and five Bronze Medals.

In the second edition held in Ranchi, India in 2013, Sri Lanka collected a total of 10 Gold Medals, 10 Silver Medals and 14 Bronze Medals.

India won 20 Gold Medals, 20 Silver Medals and 12 Bronze Medals.
