This month on CNN’s ‘Talk Asia’ Anna Coren sits down with the former Sri Lankan cricket team captain Kumar Sangakkara. In their candid conversation they talk openly about his life, cricketing career, World Cup ambitions and retirement plans.
Sangakkara also discusses the devastating three-decade long civil war in Sri Lanka where “a lot of people paid the ultimate price with their lives for that conflict” and his parents’ brave actions in protecting the lives of their Tamil friends. He reminiscences about the “pivotal role” that cricket has played in healing war wounds. Looking back on his own illustrious career, Sangakkara shares some of his highs and lows from being named the Number 1 test batsman in the world by the ICC to the violent attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team in Lahore and the “devastating” losses to Australia and India in successive World Cup finals. Finally, he discusses the World Cup 2015 which he anticipates will be “huge” for Sri Lanka and his possible retirement plans.
