Tokyo (dpa) - Torrential rains, flooding and mudslides in eastern and north-eastern parts of Japan left three people dead and brought misery to thousands in the worst-hit towns and cities, authorities said Friday.
Twenty-two out of 23 people reported missing were in Joso city, 45 kilometres north-east of Tokyo, after some houses were washed away on Thursday by waters from the Kinugawa River which burst its banks, city officials said.
Television footage showed helicopters pulling stranded people from the roofs of their homes or commercial buildings in the city, with hundreds having awaited rescue overnight.
Some residents were rescued by boat from an inundated residential area as search efforts intensified and rains continued in many parts of the north-east.
