Washington (dpa) - Hurricane Joaquin, now an "extremely dangerous" category 4 storm packing sustained winds of 215 kilometres per hour, was hitting the central Bahamas with torrential rain and flooding Thursday, according to the US National Hurricane Centre in Miami.
As of 5 pm (2100 GMT), Joaquin was around 25 kilometres north-west of Crooked Island in the Bahamas, moving south-west at 9 kilometres per hour.
Long and Acklins islands, both in the south-eastern Bahamas, experienced severe flooding, according to photos posted on the Bahamas Press Twitter feed.
Other locations in the Bahamas reported power outages.
