Could you break down the defense costs a bit further? Maybe see how much of the defense spending is related to paying salaries and pensions of the existing troops (and the families of the deceased). If the remainder is still rather significant, like the allocations for purchasing weapons, for expanding the troops, etc., then you can make a valid argument.
