Air Force outclass Havies to win SLR 7s

Sri Lanka Air Force produced some magnificent 7s rugby to beat Havelock Sports Club 24-10 in the Cup final at the Sri Lanka Rugby 7s, at the Race Course Grounds on Sunday.

Havies drew first blood through dancing nippy Mithun Hapugoda to take an early lead, but Air Force hit back soon afterwards through a try by Shahika Ashan.

Air Force scored again through Avantha Lee on the stroke of half-time to take a 12-05 lead.

After the turnaround, Air Force scored two more unanswered tries through Gayantha Iddamalgoda and Nuwan Perera.
Perera was on target with both conversions.

Havies then scored their only second-half try through Ramesh Fernando.

In the women’s final, Army beat Navy 22-10.

In the men’s segment, Navy SC accounted for the Plate trophy while CR & FC, celebrating their Centenary year, had to settle for the Bowl trophy.

The tournament saw 26 teams take part, including a Plantation rugby outfit after nearly five decades
