Cricket World Cup 1975


The first ever World Cup, the 1975 tournament featured the six full members of the then International Cricket  Conference and two invitees – East Africa and Sri Lanka. Hosts England and the West Indies dominated their groups, winning all three group matches and qualifying for the semi-finals along with Australia and New Zealand. After folding up against West Indies and losing by nine wickets, Sri Lanka then put in a sterling performance in their second group match against Australia, before both Sunil Wettimuny and Roy Dias retired hurt and Sri Lanka fell 52 runs short. Australia would go on to lose to England in the semi-finals, before West Indies were crowned the first World Champions after beating the hosts.
