Two Sri Lankan youngsters Annaya Norbert and Damsath Peiris in the girls and boys categories respectively, succeeded in the singles semi final and quarter final encounters of the ITF Asia Under 14 South Asia, South East Asia and East Asia Development Week 1 Tennis Championship at the SLTA tennis courts in Greenpath, Colombo yesterday.
Annaya came out victorious in the girl’s singles semi final against compatriot Sahansa Damsiluni. She underwent some anxious moments before overcoming her opponent with a hard fought two sets to one victory to enter the final. In contrast Shivali Gurung of Nepal had an easy passage in the other semi final against Sri Lanka’s Eliza Kahagalla whom she defeated by two sets to nil.
In the boy’s category, of the two Sri Lankans playing in the quarter finals only Damsath Peiris made it to the semis with a comfortable two sets to nil win over Akaash Hossain of Bangladesh while Revan suffered a defeat to Nicholas Pak of Singapore. The other two quarter finals saw Methey Tay of Singapore and Shayan Muhammad of Pakistan winning their matches.
It was a successful day for Damsith as he partnered Yudheerya Athapaththu and qualified to the final of the boys doubles event when the pair brushed off the challenge of the Pakistan duo Shayan Muhammad and Rasheed Ali by winning the semi final encounter with ease by two sets to nil.
The Championship organised by the Sri Lanka Tennis Association is being contested by ten countries namely Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brunei, Laos, Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore and hosts Sri Lanka.
The Championship will be continued today.
