The much-anticipated rugby clash between the CR and FC and Kandy SC, originally scheduled for February 9 at 6.30 p.m. has sparked controversy over a proposed change in the kick-off time by the hosts, CR and FC, citing concerns over crowd control and requesting to advance the match to 3.45 p.m.
This suggestion has met with strong objections from Kandy SC, who have dismissed the reasoning as invalid.
In a letter dated January 6, CR and FC General Manager, Chanaka Peiris, addressed the Sri Lanka Rugby Tournament Committee, asserting that an earlier match time would facilitate better crowd management.
The letter also requested Kandy SC to confirm their captain’s run-schedule on February 8 to ensure proper ground arrangements.
Kandy SC responded on January 7 categorically rejecting the justification provided by the CR and FC. The Team Manager Kapila Silva expressed disapproval, stating: “The starting time of a game has nothing to do with crowd control. Please don’t take us to be naive.”
Kapila also said: “CR and FC cannot change the starting time only for the Kandy SC match. In that case, all matches should be played under daylight.”
“Even our last match against Havelock SC too was changed as a day game. Please do not take us for granted.”
Kapila ended as saying: “CR and FC needs to be upfront and admit that they are afraid to lose by playing under lights than giving lame excuses.”
Though several attempts were made to contact the CR and FC General Manager, Chanaka Peiris, it was not possible.
While reluctantly Kandy SC showed willingness to compromise slightly by proposing a 4.15 p.m. start time, they firmly stood against the 3.45 p.m. kick-off time.
This disagreement highlights the ongoing tensions between the two teams, adding intrigue to their already heated rivalry. As discussions continue, the tournament committee’s decision on the final kick-off time will undoubtedly shape the atmosphere for this high-stakes encounter.
The CR and FC are the defending League Champions and are expected to play the final encounter at the Nittawela Rugby Stadium.
