Raikabula set for Trinity swansong

By Harsha Amarasinghe

Former New Zealand rugby star Lote Raikabula will end his two-year coaching stint with Trinity College at the end of their Inter-School League Rugby Tournament match against Wesley College in Pallekele today.

Raikabula though had a magnificent start to life in Kandy last year, came under heavy criticism this season with Trinity's title hopes ending just three weeks into the season.

Trinity who have not won the league title in three decades, have already been beaten twice by Royal College while St. Joseph’s and Kingswood also claimed wins over Avishka Sheikh's side. Isipathana who are playing with their worst side in nearly ten years salvaged a draw against Trinity a couple of weeks ago.

Raikabula was expected to be sacked following Trinity's horrow show in the first leg of 74th Bradby encounter, but the 34-year-old Fijian-born will part company tomorrow on mutual terms.

Inthi Marikkar has now emerged as the replacement of Raikabula after the former Kandy and CR wing three quarter  resigned from the post of Sri Lanka Rugby High Performance Director earlier this week. Daily Mirror understands that he will take charge as the interim coach.

Meanwhile, the Trinity College Rugby Scrummage which advices the school on rugby-related matters has also been abrogated with the Principal appointing an interim committee headed by D. Sivasubramaniam.
