Ride for Ceylon: Peddle Power

It’s that time of year. The Ride for Ceylon organisers are busy finalising the details for their 2024 annual cycle ride.

Sixty riders from across the globe, primarily the United States, Sri Lanka, Singapore, United Kingdom, Australia and Canada cycled along the eastern coast to Jaffna to raise funds to purchase a digital X-ray machine. The target was achieved and the much needed X-ray machine has now been installed at Green Memorial Hospital.

Always searching for fresh paths to highlight the country’s resplendent scenery, the 2024 ride will commence in Kandy on 28th Feb and finish at the hospital in Manipay on 2nd Mar.

Co founders David Rasiah and Sriomal de Silva were keen to emphasise that R4C has a holistic approach to the country’s needs. Not only do they want to rebuild the GMH, but also attract and expand tourism to the land.

The charity is supported by the following ambassadors; Dr Pia de Girolamo - a former medic turned painter, Dan Norton - former England rugby 7’s player, Jen Orr - a US ultra endurance cyclist

The annual event requires acute logistical planning.

Chief Ride Organiser Nishantha Abeyawardena is responsible for liaising with the Sri Lankan police authorities and Tourism Ministry to ensure a smooth and successful operation. Additionally, H.O.T TOURISM are the Destination Management Company, meeting the travel requirements of the ride.

The voluntary contribution of so many is paramount in delivering this amazing event. Dependant on the countless hours of time and effort provided by medics, volunteers, riders and administrators to ensure a safe and secure few days.

The 2024 ride will raise funds to develop the Paediatric Wing, the Hope Beyond Cancer Department and equip the operating theatre. The HBC Dept offers alternative care and treatments to patients who have been given a bleak cancer prognosis.

Backed by UK charity Friends of Manipay Hospital, whose Trustee Prof Jay Arnold is committed to seeing the 2024 ride being devoted to the above mentioned facilities.
