Royal College continued their winning streak and accounted for the second bonus point in their second encounter in the Schools Under 20 Rugby League when they beat Vidyartha College by 25 points (5 tries) to 10 points (2 tries) at the Nittawela Rugby Stadium yesterday.
At the short breather, Royal led 10-0.
Royal forwards were simply outstanding, with their rolling maul scoring their tries through the heavy sets of forwards. The muddy conditions were well suited for the big, burly boys from Reid Avenue on most occasions.
Their hooker, Naqeeb Mohamed, second rower, Buwanka Senanayake, and their number 8, Ayash Shiyam, were simply a treat to watch with their forwards play in front of the huge crowd at the Central Hills.

Meanwhile, Vidyartha, who opted to run wide with their three-quarter line, was checked most of the time and ran out of space in the end. Skipper Gayan Perera and Deshan Balasooriya played well. Meanwhile, their flyhalf, Rusith Chamodya, failed to find touch on most occasions. This did not allow the home team to gain territory and play in the opposition half.
Both kickers could not convert any of the seven tries scored, with Royal missing all five while Vidyartha missed their two conversions as well.
Rusith missed an early penalty in the third minute of the game. Royal, using their heavy set of forwards, scored their first try through Naqeeb in the seventh minute of the game. After some even exchanges, Royal scored their second try in the 32nd minute through Ayash.
After the turnaround, Royal scored their tries through Thineth Gamage, Yoshitha Jayasekera, and Ayash, while Vidyartha’s Kenula Wijethunge and skipper Gayan touched down once each.
Referee: Aruna Shantha
In the Under-16 game, Royal edged out Vidyartha 17-12.
