Science College looking to emulate 'Team 2015'

Science College, Mount Lavinia who have returned to ‘A’ Division rugby will look to emulate the heroics of their famous Team 2015 in the upcoming Inter-School Rugby season.

Despite producing a number of top class national players such as Richard Dharmapala, Sanjeewa Jayasinghe and Nazim Mohamed, Science College had never had their hands on the silverware, that of course until 2015 when their famous Team 2015 led by Lasindu Ishan clinched the Milo President’s Trophy against all the odds.

Dishantha Priyadarshana, Head Coach, Science College, believes he has got players who could emulate the heroics of 2015 or to actually
do even better.

“We have got a great team  who could beat any team and I think the boys could achieve what Science College achieved in 2015. They used to play some fast open rugby and we have already shown them the videos of that team. I am confident they could do a very good job this season,” Priyadarshana who has the experience of 22 years in coaching told the Daily Mirror.

Science College  though demoted to  the lower division a couple of seasons ago, returned to top division rugby along with Maliyadeva College,  Kurungeala last season.

“Science College has always been a leading rugby team in inter-school tournaments and I think they probably deserve to play ‘A’ Division rugby and I am delighted that we were able to do that last season,” the former Wesley and St. Joseph’s  coach  added.

Science have only lost two players from the previous season while last season’s top scorer for the team from Mount Lavinia – centre Sashindu Imesh would be a vital player to the team led by Sashin Munasinghe.

However, one of the  most exciting  prospects for Science College is the wing three quarter Sanjula Roshan. “Sanjula had some injuries last season but he is one player I believe who could make a real difference to this team, so is Imesh. Having coached in Sri Lanka for many years, I could say that some of these boys would go on to play for Sri Lanka in a few years time,” the head coach revealed.

PREDICTION

Science College are perhaps the most unpredictable team in this competition and are certainly capable of beating the top teams. A mid-table finish looks more likely for Science.
