Sri Lanka fall to Bhutan in tough outing

Sri Lanka fell short of a well-organised Bhutan outfit 4-1 in their second game of the SAFF Women’s Championship encounter in Kathmandu, Nepal yesterday.

Sri Lanka’s final game against Nepal will now be a must-win clash to qualify to the next stage of the tournament.

Sri Lanka, coming off an excellent performance against Maldives, entered the game with high hopes of delivering another strong display.

However, the Bhutanese side struck early, with Deki Lhazom opening the scoring in the seventh minute, capitalising on Sri Lanka’s clumsy defending.

Sri Lanka searching for the equaliser played far better football than what they did before the goal was scored. With a good period of play Sri Lanka found the back of the net through Skipper Thushani Madushika in the 23rd minute to level the score.

Not too long after the equaliser the Bhutanese restored their lead when Dorji Edon scored in the 32nd minute of the game.

Sri Lanka, eager for a second-half comeback, were outplayed by Bhutan both offensively and defensively. Bhutan added two more goals, extending their lead to 4-1
An improved performance is expected from the Sri Lankan girls in their upcoming game against Nepal.
