St Peter’s College cruised to a convincing 35-22 win over Wesley College in their Under-19 Inter-Schools League Rugby Tournament encounter played at Longden Place yesterday (24).
The Peterites having taken a comfortable 22-12 lead at the breather made up their points through two goals, three tries and two penalties against a goal and three tries scored by the Wesleyites.
The Wesleyites surprised their opponents by scoring the first try with Sahan Hansaja going over under the post giving Skipper Murshid Zubair an easy kick at goal.
However, the Peterites struck back and got their act together to equal the scores with a try from winger Raveen Fernando and Thenuka Nanayakkara’s conversion was on the spot.
Wesley took back the lead through an unconverted try from winger Tharusha Jayaweera.
The Peterites reducing the deficit with a penalty booted over by Nanayakkara and then went on to take the lead with an unconverted try from prop forward Senthika Fernando.
After the interval the Peterites extended the lead with Dilshan Madusanka going over for a try.
They further extended the lead with Fernando going over for his second try of the match which came off a five metre line-out.
Nanayakkara whose conversions went astray made amends when he booted over a 40 metre penalty for the Peterites to lead 35-12.
The Wesleyites succeeded in scoring back-to-back tries through Samuel Oghobor and Vishwa Welagedera but the Peterites come out victorious 35-22 in the end.
