Trinity College began the Inter-Schools Under-19 ‘A’ Division League Rugby Tournament on a winning note when they edged-out St. Anthony’s College Katugastota by 15 points (three tries) to 11 points (one try and two penalties) in their encounter played at the Nittawela Stadium in Kandy on Monday (12).

 

The Antonians led 11-5 at half time.

 

However, the Antonians drew first blood in the seventh minute when Mohamed Makrim put them ahead with a 35 metre penalty.

 

Seven minutes later Trinity fought back and their number eight Lenox Calyanaratne handed off few defenders to touch down and to give his team the lead. Skipper Avishka Sheik missed the conversion.

 

Trinity lost winger, Geeshapa Kulatunge for a high tackle offence and this helped the Antonians to take the lead once again through Ishara Liyanage who foxed the entire Trinity three quarters to score their only try.

 

Makrim missed the conversion but the home team took the lead 8-5. Another Makrim penalty took the Antonians to a six-point lead at half time. (11-5).

 

After the turnaround Trinity made several bold moves through their centre Warren Weerakoon who handed off few defenders before touching down to narrow the gap to a solitary point.

 

With time running out, Trinity made a thundering move from their ‘22’ and after several phases of play Skipper Sheik found the try line to give his side an exciting 15-11 victory.
