Updates: Sri Lanka at Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games - Day One


Next up, Sri Lanka will have three squash players hitting the court. Ravindu Laksiri will face Shomari Wiltshire of Guyana in the Men's Singles Round of 64 at 5:45 pm, while Yeheni Kuruppu will take on Ashley Khalil also of Guyana in the Women's Singles Round of 64 at the same time. 

Shamil Wakeel will take on Shawn Simpson of Barbados in the Men's Singles Round of 64 at 6:15 pm. 


4:20 pm: Akalanka Peiris misses out on semis

Akalanka Peiris came second in his heat in the Men's 50m Butterfly event, but failed to qualify for the semi-final, missing out by just under .8 seconds from the last qualification place. 

He clocked a time of 24.89seconds, finishing behind Lamar Taylor of Bahamas. 


4:10 pm: A big win for New Zealand against Sri Lanka in the Men's Rugby Sevens Pool A match

Ngarohi McGarvey-Black bagged 20 points, scoring two tries and converting five as New Zealand ran out 63-05 winners. 

Ashan Ratwatte scored for Sri Lanka shortly before half-time, which New Zealand led 28-05. 

Sri Lanka were however blanked out in the second half 35-00, New Zealand asserting their authority in the competition. 


3:32 pm: Men's Rugby Sevens team and Akalanka Peiris in action

Sri Lanka's Men's Rugby Sevens team will take on New Zealand at 3:42 pm in their Pool A match. 

Akalanka Peiris meanwhile will take part in the Men's 50m Butterefly Heat 4 at 3:59 pm, the first swimmer from Sri Lanka's contingent to take part at the games. 


3:25 pm: Sri Lanka finishes behind Bangladesh in Subdvision 1 of the Men's Artistic Gymnatics competition. 

Bangladesh scored 100.600 across all six rotations, while Sri Lanka scored 91.850. These are the scores: 

The competition has two more Subdvisions, which feature better ranked countries. The individual medal winners will also be determined from the scores obtained in these rotations. 


2:43 pm: Five Englishwomen on the scoresheet against Sri Lanka

The Commonwealth Games hosts ran in nine tries to beat Sri Lanka 57-00 in their Pool A match of the Women's Rugby Sevens tournament. 

Alicia Maude, Grace Crompton and Lauren Torley added four tries to the scoresheet in the second half, with two being converted.


2:32 pm: Men's Artistic Gymnastics - Sri Lanka scored 14.400 in the Rings, but finished with 23.250 in the Vault, behind Bangladesh who had 37.600 in that rotation.


2:22 pm: Women's Rugby Sevens - England take a 33-00 half-time lead over Sri Lanka in the Women's Rugby Pool A match. 

Ellie Boatman scored a quartet of tries for England, with Amy wilson Hardy adding one more. Alicia Maude converted all but of those tries. 


2:01 pm: Men's Artisitc Gymnastics - Sri Lanka lead Bangladesh in Subdivison 1 of the Men's Artistic Gymnastics event. Sri Lanka's gymnasts scored 21.050 in the Pommel event, while Bangladesh recorded 7.600 in the Rings event. 

Sri Lanka's gymnasts will tackle the Rings next. 


Elsewhere, Sri Lanka's Women's Rugby team will take on England in their Pool A match at 2:14 pm Sri Lanka Time.


1:50 pm: In action first are Sri Lankan gymnasts Ruchira Fernando, Hansha Gayashan and Jude Fernando in the Men's Artistic Gymnastics team event - Subdivision 1
