The International Cricket Council (ICC) yesterday revealed the leading international cricketers in contention to win the ODI and T20I Cricketer of the Year categories awards for 2024 and the lineup for the ICC Men’s ODI Cricketer of the Year includes Sri Lankan duo Wanindu Hasaranga and Kusal Mendis..
Wanindu boast the most wickets (26) while Kusal boast the most runs (742) in the 50-over format in 2024.
Meanwhile, Chamari Athapaththu, the captain of the Sri Lankan women’s team, has received two nominations.
Athapaththu will be aiming to emulate last year’s success in the ICC Women,s ODI Cricketer of the Year category after another headline-grabbing series of performances.
Chamari Athapaththu also shortlisted for the ICC Women’s T20I Cricketer of the Year awards.
Athapaththu showcased the breadth of her talents in the format with 720 runs and 21 wickets to add to her leading role in Sri Lanka’s Asia Cup success.
Meanwhile, Sri Lanka’s left-handed batter Kamindu Mendis has been nominated for the prestigious ICC Emerging Player of the Year Award alongside Gus Atkinson, Saim Ayub, and Shamar Joseph. Mendis has been in scintillating form this year, particularly in Test cricket, amassing 1,049 runs at an impressive average of 74.92. His stellar performances include five centuries and three half-centuries, showcasing a remarkable resurgence in the longer format since his maiden Test in 2022.
Fans are now able to vote for their favourite cricketers at www.icc-cricket.com, with other categories unlocked as the final nominees are revealed by the ICC.
The ICC Awards 2024 comprises 12 individual awards, with shortlists in nine categories being revealed by the ICC between 28 and 30 December.
Shortlists have been drawn up by a specialist panel of cricket writers and broadcasters, who selected the nominees according to on-field performances and overall achievements in international cricket throughout the calendar year.
Fan voting results will be combined with selections made by a prominent panel of international cricket media - the ICC Voting Academy - to identify the winner in each of the shortlisted categories.
Other categories which will be celebrated in the ICC Awards 2024 include the ICC Men’s and Women’s Associate Cricketers of the Year and the ICC Umpire of the Year.
In addition to the individual awards, five ICC Teams of the Year will be also decided by the ICC Voting Academy, identifying the standout XIs across men’s and women’s international cricket during the calendar year.
Winners of the ICC Awards 2024 will be announced in late January 2025.
