Hambantota, Jan. 14 (Daily Mirror)- Claiming that a future NPP government would stop politicians’ misuse of public money, NPP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake said today they will dissolve the large security detail of the President and the fleet of expensive vehicles used by politicians.
Speaking at the Hambantota District Women's Convention, he said the NPP will prove in practice that they will not misuse or loot a cent of public money and set an example to the people.
“The President has thousands of army and police teams assigned for his security. Police stations at village level have only about 10 police personnel. We will bring the security detail of the President to the Galle Face and dissolve it and send them to police stations in the villages. The President and other politicians use expensive vehicles that run only two to three kilometres a litre. We will stop using such expensive vehicles. We will ensure transparency in construction works and development in the country. We will set an example to the people so that they can follow and come forward and do their part for the sake of the country,” he said.
Dissanayake said the future election is not just another election to vote a political party and form a government, but it will be a struggle to rescue the country from corrupt and destructive rulers.
“It will be a freedom fight just as we rescued the country from white people,” he said.
He said taking over power will not be the end of the struggle for the NPP but it will be the beginning of the struggle to build the country.
“We will initially ensure basic needs such as food, education and health facilities. Then, We have a long term plan to create a stable economy,” he said.

Anura, I sincerely hope you implement what you told today at Hambantota. We have seen enough of UNP , SLFP and SLPP. To me they all are corrupt. They live on our money. They still want to rob us. Please take over the country. This time our vote is to you. Work hard from today to achieve your goals.

You are absolutely right, it is pure wastage of the Police resources . When the President is on the move four motor bikes ,two cars and 18 well armed policemen are sufficient to give a robust protection to meet any eventualities.

You first have to come to power by people choice if the elections are held as per governing party at present including the acting president. Secondly none of these would have taken place if you took the offer of governing the country after the aragalya. The opportunity was given to you, but you didn't because you wanted your conditions which you knew it would not be acceptable. Also we will never forget the experience we had in the past. All these accusations only good for the people who support you because they are not aware of your true colors. Also during the aragalya you had the spot light and scored lots of points with all the allegations or maybe the facts. But the fact remains, could people really trust you . In order to trust someone you have to be honest. Have doubts if we could find anyone who is capable to take that seat.

@Lion, who destroyed the higher education in Sri Lanka since 1971? Who killed scores of good persons during 88 and 89. Who implemented LTTE type shop closure orders to the public during 88 and 89. Who destroyed properties of some people last year? Who has conducted disruptive activities in the country all the time? If we had our higher education not distributed fir decades, we could have had many qualified youth to take up challenging positions everywhere. Look at Indian youth who mastered IT during this time and look at where they are now?

We were voted two groups, both following the same policies and both directed the country to shameful bankruptcy blaming one to other , do we need them further?, after looting the central bank by rogues led by current president?, do we need a lower middle class paddy farmer’s son from rural down south to steal national treasury to give his dumb sons, billionaires luxury?, both cheated us badly to the point not to keep faith with them at all, as it’s result whole nation to suffer poverty and international shame , we once followed middle class lifestyle but now live in poverty, we give our votes to NPP, though it may have risks, but they would be better for country than those crooks, furthermore it’s better for this government not to empower draconian acts, which will boomerang to themselves sooner

YES ! The JVP set very good examples in 1971 and in the period 1988/89, which is always remembered by the people especially by those families whose loved ones were KILLED. Loved ones were killed for doing their jobs like driving public transport, keeping shops open, and going about their daily chores during the JVP introduced illegal curfews. People will also remember their destruction of public property like buses, transformers, tea factories etc. It is believed that a Leopard will not change it's spots and the same is of the JVP too.

He wants people to trust him that "We have a long term plan to create a stable economy”. A very bold statement from someone from a party that supported the destruction of the economy in the 70's and 80's, and more recently when the orchestrated chaos and panic during the early stages of the economic crisis. It was all done by them in the quest for power. A pack of wolves in sheep's clothing.

These comments by Anura prove that the JVP/NPP have a Meeharak mentality. They “rescued” the country from the White man ? If not for the British; Sri Lanka would not have a railway line to Kandy. Tea and Rubber plantations introduced during colonial times have had productivity decimated after nationalisation. The country is now bankrupt. Many people are now lamenting this “rescue”. The realisation that a race (Sinhalese) with self-interest and corruption embedded in their DNA, should never been given the “reins of power” has become widespread amongst the community. If the truth be told: the country needs to be rescued from these ( JVP/NPP) “paddy cultivators”, whose current “honesty” is only due to lack of opportunity. Let’s hope the JVP/NPP acquire some contemporary acumen and sophistication ASAP !!!

Spot on. Very correct. Commentors in DM think that just because he says he's going to do away with the Presidential security and vehicle fleet, he's the perfect person to run the country. Why doesn't he tell us about his economic and foreign policies? We are part of an inter-connected global economy. Does the NPP have the knowledge and expertise to navigate such a complex global world for the benefit and well-being of the citizens. He's only talking about petty little things like the Presidential security detail and vehicle fleet and all our modays are singing hosanna to him. What is his take on the bigger picture??

If you are really concerned about the excess security of the president and the former presidents file case in the supreme court about the waste of money. Let the court decide whether such as a security is needed or not . Some former presidents or also need security because they have risked their lives and took decisions to order for different actions to safeguard the country. What is the point in telling all these things before becoming a president? Many president told similar things before becoming presidents to get votes of innocent people. Once elected they never kept their word. Most importantly, you don't have any solid plans to solve the issues of the country. Only foolish people will believe you and vote for you.

They say very clearly corruption is one of the main factors which hinder economic development of a country and we are experiencing it to day. So don’t disseminate statement made by them partly to create suspicions among people.they have a big plan ,above all one fact is very clear that they are not rouges so they will not misuse public money.

Scrapping President's security is not going to save this country. Give us your economic plan for the country.

You have the ex army and militants so you don't need security. Just focus on the economy not useless things like a security detail. Shows how much you know about governing.

The individual aspects and initial measures of his policy mentioned by Anura Kumara are a beginning to relieve and eliminate the needs and deprivations of the majority of the population! They don't yet say anything about his programs and concepts for promoting and stabilizing the economy, eliminating corruption and permanently debt relief for the country!!! He will only be able to start and enforce his new beginning in politics with stable majorities, and that means with reliable allies (coalitions), selected good ministers and high-quality advisors! The big question mark remains his personality!!! Does he have the stature and stature to be president!???

Intentions are good, but many are still reluctant to trust you in the absence of spelling out your economic, social, foreign policies as well as the solution for the ethnic issue. Also will you continue to stand with your comrades to continue to support the bleeding state owned enterprises instead of embarking on restructuring?

Hay Anura, why don't we see your son or the children of the other members of JVP in your political surroundings? They know that you are not going to form a government. They are more than happy about the money you guys earn from "acting job" right?

The question should be how are you going to fix the economy and corruption. JVP has no answers, their backward socialist ideas will bring misery to population. Remember 1970s ...

All politicians love the country and its people when they are in Opposition or not in power. When they come to the power they will do anything to gain "something for the family". JVP may get rid of Presidential or Prime Minister's security details and vehicles but channel them into terrorise people in a another version of White Van Culture of Rajapakse Regimes, to gete what JVP leaders want. If the leaders are sincere and abide by the law, then it is really good for the Country and its People.

If those who rubbish the NPP, saying it has no policies on business/education/health, if they could bother to read the NPP policy document, they would get some idea. If those who rubbish the NPP saying it’s all empty words/pretty talk/ dumb talk, does this mean the words of others from Dharmishta Samajaya of JR in 1977 onwards and words of Ranil/Rajapaksha only is authentic and wise. If those who rubbish NPP saying it did not take on power after Aragalaya, if only they can bother themselves to learn what Sajith and NPP said at the time. NPP offered to take power, provided the power is vested in an interim cabinet whittled down to a handful of ministers and holding elections after one year of stability to give public a chance to choose a government of their preference. Looking at some of the comments it’s not difficult to understand why we are where we are.

Tri Forces must understands that this Pin-President who has no mandate to sit in that Chair , with the power of the Tri Forces and the police keeping the people quiet. This man is running the entire country. Funds received under loans he with his catchers spending to go round the world. The Next President how is he going to repay these loans? This Pin - President is doing this purposely, knowing that he will never came back to power, and make things extremely difficult to his successor.

This is how they start. They won't stop there but will come after every single citizen. JVP memories from 1980s. If anyone supports this ideology you'll were probably not born in that era to know better than to support this kind of powers.

Absolutely right! It is a phrase used to get in the foolish majority voters and they always fall for it. The 6.9M who voted for "Save the Country" slogan are now falling for " Free from Corruption" slogan and if AKD and the gang gets elected, we will have another economic disaster! 'Try someone else' is the most foolish idea that people experiment with. Instead they should explore 'Replace good representatives with the bad' when election time comes around irrespective of the party.
