BASL condemns threats, violence to members of judiciary

In a statement regarding the resignation of Mullaitivu Magistrate, T. Saravanarajah, the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) has vehemently condemned any type of threats and violence to members of the judiciary.

The BASL warned that the resignation of the Mullaitivu Magistrate may raise serious questions about the safety of judicial officers in Sri Lanka.

Therefore, the BASL urges the government to initiate a thorough impartial investigation into the incident.

Mullaitivu Magistrate, T. Saravanarajah had tendered his resignation to the Secretary of the Judicial Service Commission citing that his decision to step down was purportedly prompted by threats.

The BASL maintained that it is committed to upholding the rule of law and ensuring the safety and well-being of all members of the judiciary.

"We strongly believe in maintaining an environment where judges can discharge their duties without fear or intimidation", the BASL statement added.

The media statement in this regard had been issued by BASL President Kaushalya Nawaratne and its Secretary Isuru Balapatabendi.(Lakmal Sooriyagoda)

On 24th November 2004, High Court Judge His Highness Sarath Ambapitiya, was assassinated by a drug lord/ peddler, the accused were sentenced to death. Sri Lankans now await what action would be taken on threats made on Mullaitivu Magistrate T. Saravanarajah.

A question is being posed, whether Sri Lankan law/s applied on a racial/ethinic basis, or the rule of law is fairly and equally applied on all citizens of SriLanka, if equally, why so far no acation taken on threat made on Mullaitivu Magistrate T. Saravanarajah. If an ordinary citizen would have made a threat on a Magistrate, the law enforcement authorities would have arrested him and remanded him, pending court decision.

Fiat justi-tia ru-at cealum "Let justice be done even heavens fall on you ", this is the need of the hour, SriLankans are watching patiently for the out come of threat hurled at Mullaitivu District judge T. Saravanarajah and how justice is going to be dispensed. In the past to my knowledge a High Court was (Mr. Ampitiya) was assassinated in 2004, some lawyers were too came under threat, few judges were transferred to deliver favourable judgement to the perpetrators of crime.

When Rev.Ganasara had threatened Homagama court , then at the time Magistrate Hon. Ranga Dissanayaka put case against Rev.Ganasara at Colombo High Court, the High court punished Rev.Ganasara for 6years imprisonment. Why Hon. Saravanaraja didn't do. Nithing to fear. Hon. Former Magistrate Should have to do without fear.
