In a statement regarding the resignation of Mullaitivu Magistrate, T. Saravanarajah, the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) has vehemently condemned any type of threats and violence to members of the judiciary.
The BASL warned that the resignation of the Mullaitivu Magistrate may raise serious questions about the safety of judicial officers in Sri Lanka.
Therefore, the BASL urges the government to initiate a thorough impartial investigation into the incident.
Mullaitivu Magistrate, T. Saravanarajah had tendered his resignation to the Secretary of the Judicial Service Commission citing that his decision to step down was purportedly prompted by threats.
The BASL maintained that it is committed to upholding the rule of law and ensuring the safety and well-being of all members of the judiciary.
"We strongly believe in maintaining an environment where judges can discharge their duties without fear or intimidation", the BASL statement added.
