A huge diplomatic gaffe came to pass this week when Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya thanked Taiwan, China’s arch-enemy, for an “incredibly generous donation” given—and said so in the presence of the Chinese Ambassador Qi Zhenhong to boot, the Sunday Times reported.
The event was the handing over of clothing material for school children by the Government of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) to the Government of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka. Instead, Dr. Amarasuriya thanked the ‘Republic of China’ (ROC)—the official name for Taiwan, with whom the PRC is on the verge of war. Sri Lanka has no diplomatic ties with the ROC either and in fact does not recognise the breakaway state.
The entire day began on the wrong footing with the prime minister’s absence at the ceremony at the Colombo Port and the Chinese ambassador kicking his heels waiting for her. Unable to stomach this—looking a gift horse in the mouth, the envoy fled back to the air-conditioned comfort of his office. He returned almost an hour later for the ceremony when the PM eventually arrived and then must have jolted in his seat when she thanked their enemy for the expensive gift.
One can only overlook the diplomatic bloopers and blunders made by the newbies in the new government as teething problems, much to the embarrassment of Sri Lanka’s friendly nations.
On Monday, the Iraqi embassy held a gala event in a Colombo five-star hotel to celebrate 100 years of Iraq’s
diplomacy. However, despite it being Industries and Entrepreneurship Development Minister Sunil Handunnetti’s turn to attend diplomatic functions in December, he failed to appear.
Neither was there anyone to substitute him. It seemed that neither Minister Handunnetti’s office nor the Foreign Ministry’s protocol division informed the Iraq embassy about the minister’s inability to attend the ceremony.
The function went ahead without a single Sri Lankan government representative attending, although Sri Lanka’s national and Iraqi national flags were on the stage. Honouring the invitation, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa was present and stood out. Only the other day, the President, in his parliamentary opening address, referred to his government’s foreign policy as being to be redirected towards increasing trade overseas.
Oil-rich Iraq is not just another country. It is Sri Lanka’s number one tea buyer, accounting for 27.11 million kgs of Sri Lanka’s tea exports in the first ten months of this year. Iraq is a founding member of the United Nations and was also a member of the League of Nations, the predecessor to the UN. (Sunday Times)

Exceptional excuse for being late and setting an example. Supposed to be an educated government especially the PM. Probably need a good lesson in geography and International history. Sometimes it’s better to be humble. Even giants fall. Stop standing up for their gaffes and hammer the iron when it’s hot. Even AKD belittled WW who said 2x0 is 2.

Getting a PhD is one thing but having a good general knowledge is another thing. Having been a university Lecturer for a considerable amount of time and a Member of Parliament for over 4 years, she should have known the difference between PROC and ROC.

@ supporter It is an easy blunder to make. Any way, the prock's are trying to cover-up the blunder of being pricks during the Ragapaksa years. Let's not forget the Pricks we're significant contributors to the malaise this country now finds itself. It is amusing that a government in power for a few short months is expected to rectify 76 years of failure overnight.

Vipin B Sunday, 15 December 2024 01:16 PM
Oh my gosh – is this really the end of the world? Come on, everyone. You've downplayed all the positive actions taken by this government, which is still only a few weeks old, yet you're overreacting to a minor mistake? Give them a chance. Be patient. Don’t jump to conclusions over every little thing. Mistakes happen – we’re all human. However, a mistake is not the same as the intentional corruption and mismanagement that led the country to bankruptcy under the Rajapaksas. Let’s focus on the bigger picture instead. As Goethe wisely said, 'Things which matter most must never be at the mercy of things which matter least.'"

Harini categorically refuted Ranil's offer of guidance on managing state affairs, ridiculing him and even resorting to name-calling—an unbecoming act for someone holding the office of Prime Minister and recognized for her academic achievements. Such behavior reflects a dire need for these individuals to undergo refresher courses in statecraft. Her actions go far beyond mere gaffes; they represent serious missteps, including the significant blunder of alienating a friendly nation like China.

It’s really unfortunate that most SL people, regardless of their educational level, think that the blunders like this have a major impact in today’s world. It seems they still live in colonial times. The world has changed, and nobody care about this kind of stuff. Today’s diplomats are keen and mature enough to distinguish gaffes from the deliberate statements.

This shows the quality of the qualifications the JVP/NPP boasts and whilst holding high ranking positions. Getting a PHd in one field does not tantamount that a person is Jack of all trades. The old school of professionals whilst qualified in a particular field always were conversant with International politics and they were abreast of the developments taking place in every sphere globally and ensured monumental blunders didn't take place since their foreign secretaries briefed them before attending highly important functions. At least before going for these important functions ensure the script on the topic one wishes to say is perused carefully by those who are competent in foreign affairs!!!!!!!!!

Why was the protocol ignored or over-ooked? Sunday, 15 December 2024 06:57 PM
YOU SAID IT RIGHT. A PM's job or Ministers' job is not easy. They have calls from every corner of their ministry. That is why they are given several officials and secretaries who will keep them updated on every matter. Here the role of secretaries/ officials are just forgotten. Is it deliberate or accidental, or were these officials ignored? Whatever the reason, the matter is very serious. We all can say anything, but lack of co-ordination and loyalty at the highest level is very important.

These book Doctors are either ignorant or purposely trying to do harm for the country. JVP has not done anything positive for 55 years of history,so expecting them to do anything good is just a dream only. Going to Supermarkets alone is not the job of a PM. Opening the road adjoining PMs residence is also a foolish step. They are all playing for the gallery.

I’d rather accept these honest mistakes from which Harini and her crew will learn, than the previous governments’ planned corruption, commissions from donation, even stupidity to say no to certain projects that don’t benefit them personally. It’s not that long ago the Japanese ambassador faulted the previous governments for corruption and thanked the current government for their genuine efforts.

SL politicians of all colour and creed are known to be late attending events where there are important foreign dignitaries. When ex-president Sirisena was at the helm he was about an hour and half late for an event that the Chinese ambassador was present. Unfortunately the audience including myself was getting very frustrated with Sirisens's late arrival. Also remember a Korean ambassador saying how SL politicians are frequently late and reminding them that a country cannot progress if leaders are a poor example to its' citizens. PM

The late Prince Philip was well known for gaffes. I do not blame Harini but the Secretary to the PM and also the Foreign Ministry for the embarrassment caused to her. The grass isn't always greener on the other side. We have a government who are on training wheels. This was bound to be the case when there was no evidence of policies and strategies during their campaign. The warning signs were there but in our haste for change we chose to ignore it so, as the saying goes, act in haste and repent at leisure. Looks like we have jumped from the frying pan right into the fire. The opposition must be laughing their heads off!!! Wonder what the next faux pas will be. This is like watching a TV drama - the audience will be kept guessing the next episode. But on a serious note, once again the poor and the fast-disappearing middle class families will end up being the victims here.
