Colombo, March 28 (Daily Mirror) - Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) General Secretary Ven. Galaboda Atte Gnanasara Thera was today sentenced to four-year-rigorous imprisonment for making a hate speech against the Islamic religion on Kuragala Temple.
Colombo High Court Judge Adithya Patabendige further ordered Gnanasara Thera to pay a fine of Rs.100,000 for making hate speech on Kuragala Temple during a press conference held in Colombo.
The Attorney General had filed indictment against Gnanasara Thera for making a deliberate and malicious statement between November 1, 2016 and December 16, 2016 at Kirulapone, which intended to outrage Islamic religious feelings, by insulting Islamic religious beliefs.

We have the deepest respect for our High Courts. What this judgement emphasises is that any citizen of this country, has an inherent right to walk our streets in peace, his head erect and free from fear.

Justice delayed is justice denied. Excellent News. If this order is carried out to the letter, this will show Sri Lanka has reformed, is on the right track of law and order and promising a future of development. However, now the internal wheels of extremism by powerful monks and their Politicians will begin.

Unlike Sirisena, Ranil should not rush to pardon him. This fellow should spend time in jail. He is an outcast and a misfit to society.

Think about it Thursday, 28 March 2024 02:02 PM
The problem is this verdict would be used as precedent in future and so many people making any controversial speech would end up in prison. This against our Sri Lankan tradition. We are following the Western countries where there is no freedom of speech, the law in those countries are all around 24/7. We should enact laws in our country that doesn’t send people to prison for making hate speech but they should face heavy fines.

Freedom of Speech is not desecrating any religion, race or caste. Freedom is also not about walking into a Court of Law and desecrate the Magistrate. Freedom of Speech is also not mouthing utter filth in public places targeting Public Officers.

I don't think we want the freedom of the wild ass in Sri Lanka. The west does not practice what they preach. They have selective justice in the west. A good example is the circuses in town these days around the application of justice for a Mr Trump.

WE THE PEOPLE SHOULD NOT GET DISTRACTED FROM THE NUMBER ONE ISSUE THAT HAS NOT BEEN RESOLVED. BRING ALL THOSE WHO WERE RESPONSIBLE DIRECTLY/INDIRECTLY RESPONSIBLE FOR THE COUNTRY'S DOWNFALL BEFORE A Thursday, 28 March 2024 02:14 PM
GREAT NEWS. HOWEVER,THE GOVERNMENT AND DECISION MAKERS HAVE CONTINUED TO HAVE DEMENTIA MENTALITY IN THE BIGGEST ISSUE RANIL AND THE GOVERNMENT HAVE EVADED AND SWIPED UNDER THE CARPET, THAT IS TAKING ALL THOSE AND THEIR STOOGES IN GOVERNMENT ND PUBLIC BEFORE A COURT OF LAW FOR FULLY RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DOWNFALL OF THE COUNTRY AND THIS WOULD REQUIRE YEARS OF THE RAJAPASKE RULE TO START WITH, SINCE RANIL WAS APPOINTED BY GOTA. ALL THOSE IN GOVERNMENT, PUBLIC SERVICE AND OR THE PEOPLE SHOULD BE PERMITTED TO PUT FORWARD WHATEVER INFORMATION THEY HAVE AND OR KNOW ABOUT CORRUPTION IN THE PAST AND PRESENT GOVERNMNT AND PUBLICE OFFICES/INSTRTUTIONS. THIS WILL ENABLE CASES TO BE BROUGHT TO COURT THAT GO TO PROVE RESULTED IN THE DOWNFALL OF THE COUNTRY AND OR ANY CORRUPTION ALONG THE YEARS OF THE RAJAPASKE RULE. THE PEOPLE WANT AND DEMAN JUSTICE IS SERVED TO ITS PEOPLE. ALL THESE SIDE DISHES BEFORE A ELECTION IS JUST DISTRACTION THE PUBLIC FROM THE MAIN ISSUE ABOVE.

They enjoyed super power through fear psychosis Thursday, 28 March 2024 04:19 PM
Why go for minority vote which is less 20%, while the majority votes are around 65%? The sensible thing is to go for a share of 65% majority votes. This is what Rajapassas and SWRD did in the past. Gota made a super show with the singing Cobra and fear psychosis! They got the result to enjoy!

We salute the court of law. Discipline in the country should be maintained. All should follow law and order. Catch the cocaine dealers put them into prison and give them intensive rehabilitation lessons. If there is bribery and corruption, rape ,sentences should be imprisonment if proved beyond doubt.

It is interesting to know what exactly he said? Did he say anything against the Religion or against the actions of those who follow that religion? These are two different types of statements.
