This appointment was long anticipated and well-deserved. It's encouraging to see individuals with an academic background stepping into the political arena, which has too often been dominated by opportunists, criminals, and incompetents (especially from pohottuwa). Wishing you all the best – the NPP has made a promising start. As they say, well begun is half done, but let’s keep in mind there’s still a long road ahead. Best of luck!

What is your opinion about appointing a man who was charged with drink driving and causing damage as the secretary to the ministry of public security? Hypocrisy?

Ravi was exceptional in his rendering of his duties as a Police Officer and resisting overtures by politicians. His minor personal lapse was not when on duty. How many of us have transgressed in such minor ways and even escaped the law. So comments should be objective and not just hurling stones.

What a stupid answer this is. His track record in office is irrelevant. You can't escape crime simply because you are performing well at office. I see this as hypocrisy at best. What would NPP have done if someone else did this?

NPP better tread wisely! If the opposition (SJB, UNP) and others somehow manage to work together just to topple the NPP, and people vote along party lines (they pretty much did that for the just concluded presidential election), the opposition just may manage to get 2/3 of the parliament seats. If that happens, they can move a no-confidence motion against AKD, get rid of him, and elect one of their own as the president. Then, all the hopes of, and efforts by, the suffering masses will come to nought! NPP, tread wisely!

Sunil Tuesday, 24 September 2024 03:35 PM
I don't think you can impeach the President for a certain period 2 or 4 years. Even then it will be not possible to get 2/3 because there will be divisions within opposition and people will find NPP is the best of all political parties. People must look at the person and vote. Don't elect fraudsters, rapists and murderers.

Why do you entertain negative thoughts always. Let's wish the new PM well, and all success. It would take at least end-November to hold the General election. Irrespective of party-differences let's elect quality, educated and Sri Lankan-in-heart

abuse of president power? pm suppose to be selected by parliament not by president

This is only an interim appointment under the new President. All 4 cabinet appointments will cease after the general election and a new set of cabinet ministers and a new PM will be appointed.

Know the Constitution - not wild guess. The president will appoint a member of parliament as prime minister, who, in the president's opinion, "is most likely to command the confidence of Parliament". At the next meeting of Parliament, the New PM can be voted in or out by majority if there is disagreement. That is how Ranil was "appointed" by Gota and endorsed by SLPP rogues in Parliament.

This is an interim govt.PM, President is well within his authority to appoint the PM like what My3 did in 2015. Parliament never selects the PM, it is the people who do it

Every appointment under the NPP will receive high commendation from within and without, only because the criterian for selection will be based on suitability. Not fame, reputation, pomposity or bank account. Way to go!

Whilst wishing the new President and his team success and steering the country towards peace and prosperity I am at a loss to see that the mentality of some of the Sri Lankan see only the negative and are not optimistic. A change in our paradigm is need if we are to go forward.

Please don't overemphasize academics and academic qualifications. They don't necessarily make someone a great person, let alone a great leader. I'm pleased with Harini's appointment as PM, not because she's an academic, but because I believe she is one of the key reasons people saw the NPP (i.e., JVP) as more democratic and no longer a violent group. She helped improve their image through her behavior and conduct as an MP. Even the most aggressive MPs in parliament rarely said anything negative about her, which shows she was respected by most.
