COLOMBO (Daily Mirror) - Sri Lanka's 1996 World Cup winning captain Arjuna Ranatunga has alleged that Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Jay Shah was responsible for the issues plaguing Sri Lankan cricket.
In an interview posted on YouTube, Ranatunga alleged the close connection with officials of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) had created a situation where submissive to the BCCI.
"Because of the connection between SLC officials and Jay Shah they (the BCCI) are under the impression that they can trample and control SLC," Ranatunga claimed.
"Jay Shah is running Sri Lanka Cricket. SLC is being ruining because of pressure from Jay Shah. One man in India is ruining Sri Lankan cricket," Ranatunga said, emphatically, adding "He is only powerful because of his father, who is India's home Minister."
SLC was suspended by the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Friday, citing political interference in the governance of SLC.

This is the bitter truth. Local politicians are supporting Shammi as they get small financial benefits. Officials of SLC is getting undue financial benefits. For any change of the direction of SLC, connection between Jay Shah and SLC should be abolished. For that, we need to remove Shammi and his clan.

Well said... Jay shah cannot be the only one but sri Lanka is itself responsible for the mess... High time put slc in order... Analyse what went wrong... Pull up the coaches... Need be bring better team manager....

This is a funny country. The entire parliament is talking hours and hours on just a one game. Plenty of burning issues are clearly neglected. The drug and children/ food insecurity/ climate change effects are critical for ordinary citizens!

Yes. The clock stopped and the entire government is pre occupied with losing the game. But if it didn't happen same corruption will continue and no one will care. This is nothing new to our little country we live in.

Do you even know what the hell is going on with SLC. Don’t you find it strange that Sri Lanka played badly not once but twice in a row whilst we played better cricket with New Zealand Pakistan England and Australia.True you win some, you lose some but with India Sri Lanka played to lose twice in a row. The whole team committed cricketing suicide. They sold the game off to the Injuns on the behest of the team management obviously.

Arjuna has a big large mouth. If the SLC crisis is due to Shah why are we going behind shammi. If true you go hunting flies when actually you are supposed to hunt leopards. Crazy politicians znd arjuna has proved it with his foul mouth

Sri Lanka Cricket was ruined by Ranatungas, Dharmadasas and Sumathipalas. This is just a war among families to take control of SLC. You are trying to take back the control to your family.

Cpt Ranatunga's statement re Jay Shah. What has corruption in SLC got to do with Shah. No logic there.

This corruption is also another big drama created by arjuna. There is a audior general report on SLC. Nobody is going to courts with that report which says there is nothing to prove there.

Why is he trying to ruin SL cricket. Is it money is it power or is it part of a larger plan to control the country.Im sure Sri Lankans are keen to know

Arjuna is very correct in the diagnosis of SLC cancer. Jay Shah and Shammi are close buddies. Jay is connected to betting companies and the rest is understandable

Zero petriotism Sunday, 12 November 2023 03:57 PM
Come on Sri Lankans. Aren't you ashamed to say someone is ruining you? First you blamed to Portuguese then the Dutch and the English and now the BCCI (Indians). The bitter truth is you are incabable imbiciles. A country like Israel is defending itself but SL much bigger is either depended and controlled by many. Worse some Sri Lankans (both Sinhalese and Tamils) will stoop to lower levels of selling their motherland. Interestingly the rest will strive to join them or ignorant of the consequences. Zero petriotism. (DM you know the sayings "truth is bitter", "facts are stubborn". Go ahead and delete this comment as you often do.)

It is easy to blame others for our failure and this is a practice we use since independence. Actual fact is, we are a country of pimps, we talk big about protecting the country but will sell our mothers and daughters if the price is right. In the past we chased the Tamils out if this country, today we Sinhalese are running like rats out of the country. So stop blaming others and learn to understand we are a country of pimps and bastards.

An unsuccessful politician who's bid was to serve sports, specially cricket with his experience, never got the sports minister portfolio but he was granted some other portifolios that he never fit enough to perform, by the 'scientific' political leaders of major colors. All these political and gamer families ruined this country, cricket and some other sports. What is most pathetic as far as the masses and fans are concerned, who are starving for basic needs, accountability, truth and reconciliation to hopelessly watch these timed-out bunch together trying to venture more bets......

Current slc no longer valid as parliment passed a ruling. Parliment has equal powers like the other main legal body. Parliment should bring and question that legal person who legally tried to save shammi when he does not have that authority. Now parliment should pass necessary act settingup a new body for management of cricket and pass strict laws preventing bookie owners or proxies of bookie owners coming to cricket management. Specially prevent shame da silva who is a proxie of bookipala. Also shame de silva can be put behind bars as he has commited multiple offences. Keeping a underworld thug as bodyguard. Remember bookiepala also got caught for aiding a underworld figure. Then tarnishing the image by asking icc to ban slc using Jay Shahs help. Then threatning minister saying he will be sent somewhere else. Latter means rw is directly helping the corrupt official. Time to send this joker rw home before he destroy this country further more.

Ruchira - You are wrong . India hosted the Pak team, playing several matches in several stadiums in the 2023 World Cup and the crowds cheered them. Indian players were advised not to play in Pak. due to security reasons as govt. of Pakistan cannot guarantee safety of the players due to current political turmoil in Pak.

I don’t think you should worry about that. First and foremost, Mr Arjuna Ranatunga dragging BCCI for SLC’s misfortunes is not Gentlemanly behaviour. Second, even though the relation between India and Pakistan is not good yet India welcomed Pakistan team like they welcomed any other team. Even during matches the Indian cricket players maintained their dignity and so did Pakistani cricket players. When India and Pakistan are not bothered about any of these matters involving themselves. Why are you worried about it?

All the comments made here are totally valid and sadly very well justified. Sri Lankans should start looking at our country when we were Ceylon. The rot and the mess started when we were granted independence from British rule. Then, the final nail in the coffin was when we became a Republic in 1972. What a disastrous decision. This proved a catalyst to chase out Burghers, and then Tamils and then worse, relegate English to a 2nd language or, in some instances, abolish it all together. Fast forward to 2023 and we are reaping the results of a brain drain, political and professional integrity and have become a melting pot of disgruntled and thieving officials in every single national institution in this country. And the victims? The poor illiterate citizens who vote for a government for a bag of rice and Rs. 5000/- Shame, shame, shame.

What a Joke. Jay Shah does not bowl, bat or field. Poor performance on the field is the issue. Politicians cannot run SLC. Without blaming, please have Inland revenue do a forensic audit or a reputed consulting company. Does the book balance. are the taxes being paid to treasury. It's easy to accuse FRAUD proving is very hard. Have we NOT learned in the recent past in Sri Lanka.

Is Arjuna playing to the gallery, or is he going senile? As much as I am disappointed with how we performed in the WC, he's going around saying a lot of things while showing very little proof. Is he turning out to be an opportunist, trying to fish in troubled waters?

Arjuna, would have been a good captain but has miserably failed has an administrator. He handled the cricket board earlier as interim Committee member on previous occasions and delivered nothing. As a minister he was a disaster as well a politician. Now he points his finger at others without solid evidence. He plays politics for his family bandism. What the Cricket Board needs is honest Administrative personnel with proven ability. A good captain never always become a good coach, umpire or administrator.

i think now ruling party(government)try to get by using loss of sri lanka cricket team because there are lot of issues such as cost of living increasing day by day , lack of quality of medicine and education poverty but as they talk cricket issues importantly they try to hide other issues because now they going to submit the budget but they might not have benefits for public in budget so they need to look as to people not concern in budget that's why they show cricket is significant issue rather than other issues you know England also had faced same challenges in world cup but not take it as much serous in political views as seen in srilanka polical

All of the pundit gurus and consultants appeared after unwanted political intervention to cricket. 96' WC win, SL earned without any modern facilities. Coach and team manager guided them to believe in their talents and cricketingly controled the final outcome of matches to their favour. So old veterans have to be watchfull how to finish an official tour without debauchery. When youngesters learn political and gambling immorality, suffer defeat. A Country too late to amend wrong ways, suffers official bans. Appamado Amathapadan.

Arjuna is basically saying that Sri Lanka lost the matches because some guy in India was having bets whenever Sri Lanka was playing. So after 2 games the results were then predictable and no one would have placed bets for Sri Lanka win. In that case , what was the Indian guy's financial benefit here. Ok , you can say loosing to India was set up but did England also loose because of the bets? These are just provoking statements to create enemies. I think Sri Lanka performed badly due to multiple reasons , mismanagement of SLC is just one reason.

SriLanka's population had chosen their leaders and PM, and in return, their PM and ministers cheated them and left country behind in pyre. Now jsut understand this. Nothing comes at free of cost. India is supporting Srilanka in all possible ways but at minimum profits. Whereas China has already glues its eyes on SriLanka under its shrewd geopolitical motives. China will surely buy Srilanka under its debt trap tricks. Now coming on cricket, SLC board. There were Zero cash in hand of SLC board in 2020. If BCCI puts any stake on SLC then in return their aare also some clause. Those money did nt belong to BCCI, but belongs to other various stakeholders. Hence, Mr Ranatunga wants to break a diplomatic relation between two countries.
