No legal or financial barriers as of now - EC

Colombo, July 12 (Daily Mirror) - Amidst concerns raised by various parties about the Election Commission’s ability to conduct the impending Presidential election due to legal and financial obstacles, Election Commission chairman R.M.A.L. Rathnayake has emphasized that currently there are no such barriers.

“The EC is fully equipped with the relevant funds and notified of legal clearance enabling us to proceed with the election,” the election chief told Daily Mirror.

He said they had had discussions with the officials from law enforcement authorities, Department of Government Printing, and other relevant institutions to ensure a smooth conduct of the election.

“Next week on (July 17), the Finance Ministry officials will be meeting us to discuss and brief matters pertaining to funds,” Rathnayake added.

He reiterated that there are currently no legal or financial obstacles for the EC.

Rathnayake further stated that the EC is empowered to declare the Presidential election after July 14. As such, the declaration is expected at the end of this month, allowing for polling to take place on a day between September 17 and October 17.

Carefully worded and accurate statement. However there are pending court rulings about the Local Govt LG elections which were delayed on a flimsy reason. Besides even not holding the long long overdue Provincial Council PC elections can be (and should be) challenged in court if EC publicly shows willingness to hold the Presidential Election PE which ideally should have come after PC and LG elections but before General Elections. EC bent down to the pressure put in by our dictatorial president to not have LG elections. He should correct it.

Why do you even have to say this? Just declare the election and go ahead like a person with a backbone. Why give explanations like this to anyone? Stop talking like this. Just declare and conduct the election.

Election Commission has big talk but still in discussion with Finance Ministry officials to discuss about funds. Election Commission does not have funds in hand otherwise they would declare election on first possible date. Ranil/UNP and Government/SLPP have plenty of time to end Election Commission. And Wijaydasa who is just another Rajapaksha type is trying to declare the Supreme Court a nobody compared to a Parliament with not long left in it's term, and hated by vast majority of the public.
