Colombo, October 2 (Daily Mirror) - The Porsche vehicle, which was given to her during her tenure as Presidential Advisor, was originally imported ten years ago, Rosy Senanayake, Adviser to former President Ranil Wickremesinghe said today.
"I have been told that it was used by a powerful person attached to a Ministry ten years ago. I urge the authorities to conduct a probe into this," Ms. Senanayake told a media briefing.
"I was given eight used vehicles during my short tenure as a Presidential advisor, and all of them were breaking down from time to time. I was given the Porshe, and I refused to accept it as its fuel consumption was high. That also broke down, and I returned it before the election," she said.

Even in Germany you don't see many Porshe cars. Only driven by wealthy people. This is a highly developed country. Unbelievable!!!!!

It's not something bought by her money. It is our taxes that paid for this extravagant vehicle. No need of Porsche, a Maruti will serve the same purpose at a lower cost.

Who Bought It And Why Thursday, 03 October 2024 08:58 PM
Exactly! If it was purchased 10years ago, should be under MR’s regime. Investigate who bought it and the purpose to purchase a high end car. Also, who used it over the years and how much it cost the governments to maintain this car over the years. If an unsatisfactory answer is given, have the Minister or official who approved its purchase to pay the government back the original cost of the vehicle as a fine. At the same time, Sell off the car to the public and deposit the funds received to the government coffers to offset a reasonable percentage for the maintenance over the past 10years.

What were you doing as advisor - was it to advise on the colour of suite and tie to wear every day. I ask you this question because you were a beauty one time when you were young.

To be fair to her, she was the Mayor(ess) of Colombo. Our politics can stink if people make comments using only part of the truth.

It's quite a strange co-incidence that politicians are claiming that their high-end Brandnew imported vehicles are breaking down after a span of only a decades use. To my knowledge, these are not run of the mill vehicles, hence for them to be breaking down occasionally is a ruse or an excuse that is being flaunted to cover the wanton wastage of Politicians

Focus on bigger things and quit being small minded Wednesday, 02 October 2024 02:49 PM
What's the big deal with having an official vehicle? Private firms too give itnas an incentive as it is a necessity to do the job and most people have vehicles so it is not even a luxury. A porche is worthless on Sri Lankan roads! I mean how fast can you go in Colombo traffic anyway. The government should not be focused on petty things, and the time and effort is bettee spent on bigger issues that need immediate attention like fighting poverty, economic reforms, infrastructure development, drug epidemic, educational reforms, shortage of doctors, bringing hospitals up to standard, senior citizens, disability assistance... I can go on and on but what's the use. No government has ever done enough and nothing will change.

These are petty excuses , honestly I have been a staunch UNPEr, still am. But I am with AKD on the fight against corruption / unwanted violence in the form of terrorism or racism / fight against unreasonable perks to people who are suppose to serve the people for free but are given exorbitant and flashy compensation. We need to curb all these BS and make these ministers or whoever it is serving the people grounded. No need of fancy flying 4X4 or any luxury BS , if AKD can pave the way for these people will idolize him for eternity.

All of you are missing the point. Why should an average person, a government servant, should be given a super luxury car, while everyone else could travel around in a Nissan or a Ford or a Hyundai. Why Porsche? Get off your high horse lady, and get real according to the affordability and fianancial state of the country. You people do not have common sense or grey matter in the brain to understand what people are complaining about, and so you do not deserve to be a mayor or now an advisor to the President. Just GO HOME Rosy!

Give a car allowance instead of cars .The recipient can spend the allowance the way they wish, use their own car, come by taxi, whatever, even save their allowance by using public transport . As always there can be exceptions when a car needs to be allocated. The country will save a lot on expenditure by operating like this in a budget friendly way

No AKD must auction all these vehicles and disregard car allowances or car permits in the future. NPP members not bothered about Luxury vehicles and they are used to normal double cabs. Anyway, NPP will form a new Government and cut down unnecessary cost.

FredSnR Thursday, 03 October 2024 12:57 PM
Was not thinking of luxury cabs at all.And speaking of unnecessary expenditure you could look at the extraordinary delays in court proceedings, must be a huge burden to the taxpayer and justice delayed, there are many other things like that staring in plain sight like major roads without pavements for pedestrians Old Kesbewa Road Nugegoda example Rosy may have used it while travelling in her Porsche .Lived half my life abroad can see the ridiculousness of what is happening good luck to a future govt which we must all support if they are to succeed

Roadworthy or not, fuel efficient or not Porsche is a status symbol and sends a wrong signal to country that is bankrupt. Should have given a standard reasonable reliable vehicle Rosy should have known better and refused the vehicle upfront. That would have been smart move and respect for would have grown

If this vehicle was a brand new one some of the comments are reasonable but a vehicle used for more than 10 years is worth for the scrap yard only those who cannot understand the strategy adopted by these so called puritans of casting aspersions on others and making a mountain of a molehill is a sinister approach for the forthcoming election. Our citizens should be able to read behind the lines the strategy of throwing mud at others with a view of getting an overwhelming majority at the next parliamentary elections similar to Gota's strategy of making a hue and a cry that the security was weak and what happened at last with the Easter Sunday bombing and his exit which is history. As the saying goes" people who live in glass houses should not throw stones" as you do not know when the Bells Toll for you!!!!!!!!

Were these cars used for Night Races at Galle Face? Wednesday, 02 October 2024 04:49 PM
Reading all above comments, one thing is revealed. i.e. all these so called vehicles were not purchased during 2022 - 2024 Ranil's presidency. But they were handed over to staff of Ranil, when new staff assumed duties. In other words ,Old Second or Third or Fourth hand garbage vehicles used by several people. So, why do you all want to lay it at Ranil's door step. We all know of sons of a former president who love to race at Galle face. They did not bring their own cars!

What advise were you capable of providing the Wasteful Ranil Rajapakse. What qualifications you process to hold such a post. Surely people of your standing should use public transport or walk to your office if you ever had one. Now it is blatantly evident why you got on to election propaganda platforms to sing praises of Mr Pocket Billiards. Do you now realize despite hardships the ordinary people went through you good for nothing advisors were maintained by public funds. Shame on you.

Importing a Porche or any other high end vehicle for government use was an utter misuse of public money. There should be some rules established for government vehicles. If these rules are broken then , legal action should be taken against those who misuse. The maintenance cost of a Porche is very high and only wealthy persons are having this vehicle in most of the countries.

You say 'I was given the Porsche, and I refused to accept it as its fuel consumption was high. That also broke down' What are you talking, You refused to accept it, then it broke down, So you actually used it, Further it is the taxpayer money you had used for fuel, it broke down due to your negligent driving, and the tax payer has to pay for the repairs as well,

Yohan Wednesday, 02 October 2024 06:37 PM
All these luxury vehicles at all ministries should be auctioned and sold. Get rid of them asap as non of them have good fuel consumption. From the money received , give good fuel consumption and low maintenance cost hatchbacks and also give vans where it will be useful to the ministries. Also investigate who approved getting luxury vehicles to ministries and fine them accordingly for wasting public money

I am a PHd holder and work as an senior engineer in USA, where cars are relatively cheaper. Each time I visit Srilanka, I see luxury vehicles on the street and wonder what kinda money these people earn to afford these luxury vehicles. Now I understand, tax the common man, so even the industrialist cant afford to buy a vehicle for their business. Welcome to Mahinda Chinthanaya!
