Tariff rates for roof top solar revised

Colombo, July 02 (Daily Mirror) - The Cabinet of Ministers has approved new tariff rates for rooftop solar and other renewable energy projects.

The decision was announced by Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekera in a recent post on X.

The revision, effective from July 1, 2024, is based on a formula adopted in 2022, which considers the USD rate, interest rates, and other economic factors. This formula ensures the tariff rates are reflective of current economic conditions.

"The revised rates aim to promote the development of rooftop solar projects and other renewable energy initiatives under 10MW," Minister Wijesekera stated. "This decision follows extensive stakeholder consultations and a detailed report from the tariff committee."

The revised tariff rates for rooftop solar development and the renewable energy feeding tariff are as follows:

Revised roof top tariff (20-year flat rate):

- Up to 500kW: Rs 27.06 per kWh
- Over 500kW: Rs 23.18 per kWh

Revised feeding tariff (20-year flat rate):

- Solar: Rs 25.48 per kWh
- Mini Hydro: Rs 30.53 per kWh
- Wind: Rs 29.86 per kWh
- Biomass: Rs 52.77 per kWh

Why so high rates for biomass? I think they have revised these to help their friends with such projects.

Two questions- Is this the rate paid by CEB to solar householders selling excess power and is the rate reduced by CEB. Please say increase or decrease rather than using the word revised as it will be more helpful for customers and general public to comprehend it fast.

p.s. If is a Feed In Tariff (FIT) paid to the producer the minister is talking about, it should be almost the same as CEB is selling power at, but not a flat rate for a 20 year period.

as usual, the wording is set to confuse rather than explain with clarity. More so, many have been taken for suckers by fraud solar panel providers and are not able to seek justice. A big company, having earned illicitly by the war, have also abandoned their solar panel clients.

what's the logic of multiple rates?. simply have i=one rate say 30.53 for all, Why Bio bio mass has a very high rate? Ultimately consumers pay the price.
