Colombo, January 1 (Daily Mirror) - Claiming that Sri Lanka achieved significant economic stability as a nation in 2024, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake said with this progress as the foundation, the country would move forward in 2025 with renewed vision and determination, working towards creating a prosperous nation and ensuring a beautiful life for everyone.

In his New Year message, the President said in 2025, with courage and unwavering commitment, the government will strive to regain the victories missed in the past century and bring these dreams to fruition.

"As Sri Lankans, we step into 2025 with the dawn of a new era, a time when the dreams of prosperity that our nation and its people have long cherished begin to materialise.

The parliamentary elections of 2024 enabled us to establish a government with a strong majority, earning the trust of people across the North, East, West, and South. With this mandate, we have initiated a transformative political shift, fulfilling our democratic responsibilities to build the good governance our citizens aspire to.

Our primary developmental goals include eradicating rural poverty, implementing the "Clean Sri Lanka" initiative, and building a digital economy. The “Clean Sri Lanka” initiative, launched alongside the New Year, aims to uplift society to greater heights through social, environmental, and ethical revival.

"We achieved significant economic stability as a nation. With this progress as our foundation, we move forward in 2025 with renewed vision and determination, working towards creating a prosperous nation and ensuring a beautiful life for everyone. I firmly believe this moment marks an exceptional opportunity to inspire new ideals and foster greater unity for the benefit of all.

Marxists are good at talking but fail to deliver at any level. Is there any country in the world that has become prosperous under Marxist rule? NO. The NPP guys claimed that Rs 150 per litre of petrol goes to the pocket of the then Mister of Petroleum as commission and once they come to power the price of fuel will be reduced by the same amount overnight. Did it happen? NO. They also said that rice oligarchy will be busted at a stroke of a pen. Did happen? NO. Further, they asserted that the VAT of essential goods will be reduced. Did it happen? NO. The list is endless.

But, Anura yelled that he would blast the rice mafia in 24 hours. He now knelt before them and increased the rice price by Rs. 10/= while banging the desk. They promised to amend the IMF agreement and remove taxes particularly on essential items. Reduce the fuel prices after removing commissions and reduce the diesel price to Rs. 150/=. Blast the rice mafia. Cancel all unsolicited contracts including Trincomalee oil tanks agreement . All was to be done in a short time with the executive powers. But, nothing has been done and 7 M people still starve as Ranil's time and no difference to Ranil's time. The Ranil advanced repayment process which was to be started from 2028, not changed though the IMF wanted to start from 2033. Talks only. No action. Just compare with the 100 day programme of the Yahapalan (Good) governance with no parliament power. Gota part II in operation. A disaster, indeed. What a system change indeed of intelligent 6.8 Million people.

Report card so far- Please get your PM to learn a bit more about global politics and geo dynamics (do not upset any nation, not to say trust your neighbours). Honeymoon is over now, you guys have to prove what you promised before elections to deliver, no commissions going to minister now so reduce petrol price by Rs160, electricity tariff by one third. Act on those files you were showing and harping in parliament sometime back (yet to open a single file). Appoint suitable administrators and / or professionals (scientifically) to lead the government outfits not your or your ministers' henchmen, can you explain SLPA appointments if not SLPA will remain same old aimless outfit for the next few years. You got to deliver Sun and moon you yelled and promised in your election stages. We are watching.

It is more than surprising when, after a relatively short period of change of government, one reads many critical, sometimes more than critical comments on the policies of Anura Kumara and his team!!! But, as a philosophical pessimist, one could say that that is how people are, or more precisely, that is how most people are!!! Using Sri Lanka as an example: have most people forgotten the "miserable" state in which the previous governments handed over this country after years of mismanagement and corruption, and the damage they caused to the people's minds!? Now most people expect that the essential things can or must be transformed into their positive counterparts within a very short space of time!!! But far from it, the dry spell that the people, unfortunately especially the poor, still have to endure will continue! In my opinion, the government is on the right track, the people need patience and Buddhist serenity!!! Then success will follow!!!

The parties who lost the election are making all kinds of anti-government plots specially civil servants who were appointed by MR and co: But it will take some time to dislodge them or win their hearts and minds : go slow don’t worry about people say : Hasty steps are not good but slow get these crook and crafty civil servants out or make them work hard so that they will not be able to do any dirty work: have some secret agent to catch all them and send them home if they found acting against the national interest or plotting against the government: We still trust you and your team your excellency but please show your strength when needed but in a legal manner: leave all cases in the hand of judiciary and let them deal with all legal cases

HE the President continues to conduct himself as though he is addressing campaign rallies, rather than fulfilling his duties as the executive leader of this beleaguered nation. The role of an executive president demands a clear focus on strategic planning, the establishment of robust implementation frameworks, and the development of rigorous monitoring mechanisms to ensure that policies translate into tangible outcomes. Unfortunately, my personal experience with various government departments under this administration has been profoundly disheartening. Despite promises of reform, there has been no substantive improvement in the system. Many public officials remain entrenched in their old habits, displaying an overbearing sense of authority and arrogance, with little to no regard for the principles of public service. The absence of accountability and commitment to citizen welfare continues to undermine the government's credibility and effectiveness.

HE the President says that we should strive to regain the victories missed in the past and "bring these dreams to fruition". That is a long shot indeed. The 'dreams' will remain 'dreams' at the rate this government is taking their own cool time to achieve all that they said during the campaign trail. If not for the victories we managed to achieve in the past, especially recover from the financial crisis ably shouldered by the former President, so called "Seeya", we would still be in slumberland!

There is no big challenge, no loans to pay for next 5 years, no civil war no Covid related economic downturn and no JVP disruptions. Tax is already setup, infrastructure already built, loans already negotiated , tourism is picking up, foreign employment is up big time , tourism is up big, exports are up, all initiated and done by so called corrupt previous governments. So , just managing with some arrests here and there would be good enough with the media shows of PM handshaking with staff, PM going to Super Market etc.

Dear President, There are basic important issues at each ministry is pending , these are without incurring any cost. Honeymoon is over, Be on the shop floor. I was coming from Sydney and at the airport no organised including trollies everywhere , toilets, customs officers siting and doing nothing, no reason to sit as a group, were the same , same as all the trains and station toilets to be kept clean. Clean city Strat from our public places toilets, trains, train stations , markets and facilities. These the council jobs too. I visit Sri Lanka every three months and do not see any changes in pubic services starting from Airport to traffic police. Clean Sri Lanka should include corrupt free police and public services. Clean them .Minsters, your academic and lazy working pattern do not help . While appreciating corrupt free behaviour start your ministries to fix issues without any delay.

Loan Plus.lk, loanme.lk ,fastrupee.lk, and its a Daylight robbery of innocent customers hard earned monies and, as bank interest rate is less that 3% per month. CBSL should intervene and Bring a law to recover the Exorbitant interest Paid by innocent customers in the Past and to return the excess paid interest to customers from the above Online lenders. Pl Present to the Parliament and Pass the CBSL drafted Microfinance and Credit Regulatory Authority Act.
