Australia played down concerns on the travel advice on Sri Lanka after hoteliers noted it was having a negative impact on bookings.
The existing travel advice on Sri Lanka, which was last updated in May 2024, notes that Australia reviewed its advice for Sri Lanka and continue to advise exercise a high degree of caution.
It also says that public demonstrations can occur throughout Sri Lanka and may become violent.
"Sri Lanka is due to hold its presidential elections in 2024. Public demonstrations can occur throughout Sri Lanka and may become violent. Avoid areas impacted by demonstrations. Demonstrations can lead to disruptions to traffic and public transport. Follow the advice of local authorities and monitor the media for updates," the travel advice notes.
The local hotel industry said the travel advice was putting fear in the minds of Australians looking to visit Sri Lanka.
However, Australian diplomatic sources insisted that the travel advice was a mere continuation of what was already there and not new.
