Australian MP Andrew Charlton has proposed that January be recognised as Tamil Heritage Month in Australia.
He put forward the proposal to the Australian Parliament saying it will promote Tamil culture and contribution to Australia.
The MP said that January is significant as Tamils celebrate Thai Pongal.
Charlton said that it will also recognise ancient Tamil work like the Tirukkural which he says inspires people into ethics, governance and human values.
The MP also noted that Tamil Heritage Month will benefit local businesses.
MP Michelle Ananda-Rajah, born to Sri Lankan Tamils, welcomed the move.
She said the move will help the Tamil community in Australia celebrate their heritage.
