The chinese scientific research vessel 'Yuan Wang 5' arrived at the Hambantota port this morning amid concerns raied by India.
Sri Lanka on Saturday had granted permission to the Chinese “research/survey” ship Yuan Wang 5 to dock at Hambantota Port from August 16 to 22.
India had last month raised security concerns over the presence of the ship close to the Indian coast, and external affairs minister S. Jaishankar is understood to have discussed this with his Sri Lankan counterpart Ali Sabry when they met in Cambodia earlier this month.Following the concerns raised by India, Sri Lanka had on August 5 asked China to defer the arrival of the ship — initially scheduled to dock at Hambantota from August 11 to 16 — till further consultations without making any public reference to New Delhi.

Surveillance ship now transitioned to research vessel. China notched up and additional win. India decremented to an additional loss

When India is frequently characterising “Sri Lanka and it’s territorial waters” as Indian backyard. The visit by this Chinese maritime reconnaissance ship is very reassuring. I hope the ship stays for a longer period .

Reassuring for what? Out of the pan into the fire, with their bogus projects that pushed us into their debt diplomacy. We hate our own country men because of their race, religion, but get reassured by a dictatorial regime that suppress its own people ? I rest my case and no wonder Srilanka in such a mess when it has ignorant people like you.

Nimal, we will see how you repay the loans when they come knocking on the Door. U can change the Rajapakshas and Wickremasinghes but let's see how you get out of this. And as long as you are ok with the Chinese running u for their Mule we will stay out of your business. The day it becomes a problem to us, the current crisis will start looking like a cakewalk.

This ship is a spy and warship operated by the Chinese People's Liberation Army with 2000 soldiers on board. This is clearly a military operation? In the contract for the use of the Hambantota port by China, military use is excluded. China obtained permission to dock at Hambantota by blackmailing and intimidating the Sri Lankan government. China is not a friend of Sri Lanka but is pursuing a neo-colonialist policy to make poor countries dependent on it. To hell with the Chinese.

hope that it is also followed by more PRC boats carrying food, essentials, medicines and fuel. Next time probably India wont wont be throwing any largess to the starving lankans. Only option remains if fleeing on fishing boats or jumping sides like in CWG.

Wow.. where were these chest thumping messages when SL was taking grants from India when China left you to vultures. The stupidity of South Asians is they hate their neighbours and love the foreigners. SL is showing it after taking billions when in crisis. Thank you Sri Lanka.. You proved yourself

Is this the same India, once upon a time trained and armed Many Terrorist groups, including the LTTE, which cost the Lankan state Billions to end the war. The Grants given by India a drop in the ocean, and they should be giving a lot more. Just a thoughy

This is got nothing to do with grants or loans. This is just another vessel from one of our friendly nations. India or America got no right to tell SL what to do. It is our sovereign right to welcome any person or vessel and provide necessary services within our territorial waters and borders. Thank you India for supporting us at this difficult juncture, but please keep it in mind that your support does not permit you to pinch us and control our relationships with other nations. Also Please note that the Indian Ocean is not India's Ocean.

Please remember that China stood by Sri Lanka throughout history, when India betrayed us for two-political reasons. The dark side of it is the interference in our internal affairs and dictating terms to us. The worst being the training and arming of the Tamil terrorist organizations.

Remember what the great leader Ho Chi Ming said when he invited the French back after WW2 into Northern Vietnam to get the Chinese army that occupied northern parts of Vietnam to withdraw: "It is better to sniff French shite for a short while then eat Chinese shite all our lives" We are now eating Chinese shite in their substandard fertilizer, substandard Norchimodai equipment etc and their occupation of our Hambantota and Port City territory for 100 or more years.

Daily Mirror is a fully fledged SRI LANKAN news paper. Why are many people crying for India in a Sri Lankan paper. They could write to Indian papers and cry for India. This shows all those who are crying for India are Indian paid operatives masquerading as genuine Sri Lankan readers.

@Krishna- let India grant another $30 billion to SL, feed the people for 5 years, you will never see the Sinhalese considering Indians as friends or brothers. It’s proven time and again. For most Sinhalese, India is a worst enemy to be kept far away.....but could be manipulated for gain from time to time.

Chinese success of Arrival of this vessel would make path for more vessels even more war like, which will further annoying India and USA,Chinese valued H’tota harbor much less than loan borrowed from them to built it,the difference is what the Rajapakshas swindled and pocketed, Chinese purposely use corrupt MR and BR to have this asset, other rogue RW sold harbor for few bucks for pocket money , all of us seem losing our motherland due to greed and shortsightednesses of opportunistic srilankan politicians

China and India are both important to us as well as the US and Russia. We have allowed such visits before of other countries. Geo political considerations should not deter our non aligned status. India has privided vital support in recent times too. China has helped us in the past in various forums and during the war and in development efforts and during the pandamic and we shall want them for debt restructuring etc, as its a major power house in the world, whether any one wish to acknowkedge or otherwise. We as a smaller nation need to be guided by our straregic interests and act accordingly.

So the scenario is that the Chinese ship will be monitored by the gifted Indian aircraft with or without Indian trainer pilots and this time no dhal droppings. Before the Pandemic, corruption destroyed everything achieved from the humanitarian operations... and no end to it if there are no elections sooner.

Looks like the timing of this ship is more to do as a support to current SL President in case of another mass protests. Otherwise why on earth China has to dock in SL harbor for refuelling, when SL itself struggling for crude oil supply!

When there is any crisis, these people looks at India first if India denies then other country. Even the come India for better life and never return back. If war starts between India and China in this region then the lankans will be devastated. Seems people of Lankans are from Ravaan's ancestral line then don't expect more from them.

Welcome to Sri Lanka Yuan Wang-5. After all this harbor is yours to visit and enjoy for the next 90 odd years or 6 more generations. kindly make yourself home and do your Satellite research. One humble request for the Chinese. Please don't lay claim to our Island after the end of 90 years lease as yours. Recently, I read that for China, Hong Kong belongs to China, Taiwan belongs to China, South China entirely belongs to China, Paracel reefs belongs to China, Senkaku Islands, East Turkistan, Arunachal, Sikkim, Tibet, Ladakh belongs to China. China feels that everything in Asia belongs to them except, the "Corona Virus" which actually originated and belongs to China.

China wanted Hambantota to surround India a squeeze its balls. But China is now squeezing our balls as well. According to Nikkei Asia newspaper, Beijing allegedly warned behind closed doors of possible economic ramifications linked to the restructuring of Sri Lanka’s debt, as well as ongoing talks for a $US4 billion ($5.7 billion) aid package. We fought the LTTE to keep the sovereignty of Lanka which we have now lost to China

So far Sri Lanka has sold only the port to China,Now slowly China will take possession of Sri Lanka. And after 20-25 years Sri Lanka will be just a slave of China This is the condition of all the countries who have taken loan with China.

Seeing the comments from Indians here it is quite obvious that they are hostile to Sri Lanka and from recent history where they supported the Tamil Tigers it is essential that we do not align with India. Even the Tamil population do not consider the Sinhalese to be human, if they had won the war they would have exterminated every Sinhalese in their territory (as they have already done in the North). China may be bad but India can be even worse.
