Health emergency at Galle prison, admissions restricted

A health emergency has been declared at the Galle prison due to a contagious disease spreading among the inmates.

The Health Ministry said today that the disease spreading within the prison is Meningococcal disease, which is contagious.

Speaking on the matter, Prisons spokesman Chandana Ekanayake said nine inmates have been hospitalized with fever and skin infections.

Two inmates have died on the 13th and 20th of this month due to this illness.

Moreover, Ekanayake said admissions to the prison and moving inmates out of the prison has been restricted in light of the health emergency.

Further investigations are being carried out into these deaths while a special medical team from the Karapitya Hospital has visited the prison to treat the inmates and prison staff.

Prisons in Sri Lanka are usually triple overcrowded. Cells for 40 people are overcrowded with 120 people who have to sleep tight like sardines without being able to turn over. This is against humanity. Many prisoners are also behind bars for nonsensical reasons. Almost all prisons are centuries old and do not meet international humanitarian standards. Once a prison is filled with the intended number of prisoners, prison superintendents should refuse to take any more prisoners, as is the case, for example, in Germany, where, incidentally, every prisoner has the right to his own solitary cell.

Majority should be given work to devolop the countries economy specially the local produce farming Agriculture keeping the country clean waterways beaches roads drainages country need a mechanism for this prisoners keep only the ones that need high security others must be given task specialy rural outskirts for economy developments..Majority will improve life style with some counselling etc.....
