Controversial Sri Lankan cricketer Danushka Gunathilaka is still only a suspect in the incident, and if he is proven guilty, Sri Lanka will enforce all its laws against him, Sports and Youth Affairs Ministry Secretary Dr. Amal Harsha de Silva said.
Addressing the media, he said Danushka Gunathilaka was a cricketer who was approved by the Sports Minister and sent to Australia representing the country.
"We cannot escape from our responsibility. We should appear for him, if he has come up with a problem. If he had committed this fault with his will and knowledge, he has to pay all his expenses for the legal assistance he was offered. We have no authority to help him out with his personal issues, spending public money," he said.
"Danushka has only allegations against him, therefore he is still representing the country. During a discussion, Justice Minister Ali Sabry also said that he is only a suspect, not a culprit. But if he had done anything wrong, he should bear the full responsibility for it," Silva said.
"If he is proven guilty, he should settle all expenses incurred by the Sri Lanka Cricket (CLC) Board. "Discipline is a must when it comes to sports, and we will do our best to maintain our image," Silva stressed. (Chaturanga Samarawickama)

Surely a lot of commenters must be happy that this will be my last comment ever in this DM. I am totally disgusted by the comments about this issue. Very denigrading and insulting comments about this poor woman and Western women in general. No means no, no matter what! This is not about f***cking cricket. This is about a man destroying this womans life. This is about women abuse, degrading women. Some "adult"men even make fun of this severe offence. Sri Lankan men still have a very long way to. I feel very sorry for Sri Lankan women. These comments will never be published in the British DM as Western men are more sophisicated and respectful. Shame shame shame on you all, chauvenist male pigs.

Some comments ask why authorities kept him so long as a passenger after injury. This cricketer's previous behavior falls in line with Rajapaksha politics that trust and prolong such men and women for Asian wonders. Next time they will 'hit the cup' without going thru qualifying stage. If you don't agree, do unarmed aragala for a full turnaround in all sectors of the country under a just leadership.

Don't penalise him like this ...before this incident took place who hired him ..Did he go for his personal business or did you send him on behalf of the country? Yes; he may have done some thing wrong and law of land will deal with it ...But these politicians don't understand the issue here ...the sport ministry hired him and till he come home you are responsible for his expenses.you can't give up in the middle of the road for his mistake.... You can be sued if you don't pay him for his expenses and salary till he is found guilty you can't behave like this

What is being spoken here public money, recovery etc... first let's get the trial sorted and then lets see as he has got a 9, 1/2 weeks for his next court hearing. This point we will all be aware what transpired at this ladies house. This is a shame for Sri Lanka and Sri Lanka cricket. He should have been banned from all forms of cricket for his dismissal disciplinary procedure and should not have been allowed to represent t xpunrteynor the sport. His place should have been given to a worthy person. As for public money I guess no one will be ever interested if it was reciverd or not as the public has lost more and not got anything back. So let SLC be content with the outcome and no further investigations will be needed to justify his case to the masses. He has been a failure so better drop him suspend him and ban him, as example have to be set.

Let the accused clear his name with his funds. He didn't commit the crime in Sri Lanka's name, or is it? Any other person in a similar situation would have to cough up the dough. I am sure DNA evidence will get him if he had done the deed.

This is a personel matter related that individual. Not related at all to cricket and cricket board of Sri Lanka. It is wrong to spend cricket board money for this incident even as a loan. Dr. Amal Harsha de Silva does not have the courage to act against SLC for ruining Sri Lankan Cricket. For example, for not taking appropriate actions against cricketers who committed serious acts of indiscipline. for increasing the number of First Division clubs to 22 to get votes during the election for office bearers of SLC, for not spending money to build large cricket grounds with fast wickets so that SL cricketers will be able to play well abroad, and for not setting up a world-class Cricket Academy, etc. Either you act or resign.

I do not think in SL he will be found guilty! What has happened to many politicians and others - with clear evidence of Kappam (Prasanna), with clear evidence of bribes (pagapala), Bank robbery, drug dealing, theft of public funds etc - the government of SL found them innocent and acquitted. This is not the first time for this cricketer - do you find anything against him? No!

The allegations around four counts of intercouse to be contested against consensual or non consensual. As per the amendments to criminal law, the defendant lawyer should contest on this basis. Usually anyone will get bail if there is no danger to community by the accused. However, without any criminal history not letting him on bail is to be understood.

Why has the Sports Minister authorized Government funds (public money) to pay for his exorbitant legal expenses due to his personal sexual misadventures? Either way, he will not be in a position to re-pay it under any circumstance. Sri Lanka can't afford to waste public funds like this unnecessarily.

Why are they saying "if he has done something wrong"? What about the fact that he left the hotel room and spent the night having sex with a woman.. isn't that wrong? Irrespective of the outcome of his court case in Sydney he should be severely dealt with in Sri Lanka and banned from representing the country in future. His past profile is enough for all to see who the Sports Minister has approved.

What have the officials done to instill discipline otherwise what is the point in having so many officials on this tour if they have acted independently. When Ana Punchihewa was the Tour Manager the players were kept under a tight leash, is that happening in today's context when previously some of the players went out of the bubble policy to different places. All these players are selected by the high ranking Sri Lankan officials and no player forces himself to the team. Especially when a team is govt. sponsored it is the officials under whose custody the players remain are responsible for all acts of the team players otherwise where do you draw the line to the conduct of players and others. Please do not dump these players as when they fair well the bouquets go to the country and when anything of this happens only the players get the brickbats from all sources whilst the responsible officials pass the buck. Barack Obama always said the Buck Stops here caliber of Good Leaders.

Is there more? Tuesday, 08 November 2022 06:39 PM
Terrance, I suspect the officials on tour also must have been in someones house at the time just like DG. So how can they monitor the players? Only difference would have been, they must have complied with the women's demands unlike DG or is there still time for something weired to be reported like the latest on other players misconducts.

Man with a past track record, whats the doubt here ? Many are also trying to justify his actions, dont these people have daughters and sisters ?

@Roisin, I refer to your comment, "This is about a man destroying this woman's life" Please note he has not been convicted by the courts, just the media who naturally thrive on sensationalism. She invited this man to her house and subsequently leveled accusations. Let the courts decide if they carry merit or not. In the meantime, use your discretion wisely rather than simply letting lose.
0 0
Terrence K Wednesday, 09 November 2022 07:45 AM
@Roisin whilst in society there are different opinions expressed based on the circumstances of this incident . Do not be under the impression that all Sri Lankan men are inferior in their judgement whilst men in Britain are sophisticated and respectful. Whilst we do not condone this type of behavior whether men or women who have a conscience knows what is right and wrong thus their views is not to degrade a woman as we have families and children as an adverse comment is like spitting up which falls on our faces. In UK the scenario there is different as men can date women from an early age whereas we don't have a culture of that sort. Please do not whitewash women in the business of Prostitution as they have many mates and some of these comments are not a degrading of women but a segment of professionals who are in the business from ancient times. In this case violent /forceful behavior on the man's side is what went wrong as both wanted consensual sex. You need two hands to clap.
