Health Minister Keheliya Rambukwella responded today that he has cleared a bill amounting to Rs. 7 million but there is a disparity with figures released by the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) and he had on several occasions asked for clarification.
Responding to reports that he had to pay a mega electricity bill amounting to Rs. 12 million as claimed by CEB, he said this bill was not under his name and he had on several instances informed the CEB on this matter and told them to change the name.
He claimed it was under the previous tenant's name. However, the CEB had failed to act to date.
When he shifted to the particular residence in 2015, he had been getting monthly bills of Rs. 25, 000 to Rs. 30,000 but the figure kept on rising and one month, even reached Rs 760,000.
He said he had written to the CEB asking for clarification on this matter but he had not received any answer.
He said as a responsible citizen, he had cleared Rs. 7 million, but would raise the matter; legally as to why the CEB had not rectified it and why there are such fluctuations in the monthly bills. (Sheain Fernandopulle)

We can't accept minister's version of things. He simply remained silent all this time and when the public came to know about this through news papers, he plays a different tune. This is what all ministers do !!

Are you saying Mr Keheliya Rambukwella has to shout about the erroneous bill through the news papers. We know how the guy who comes to record the meter reading just dumps through the post box. Don't they have a responsibility to report to some responsible officer at the Board, the bill needs to be checked as it is over the top. There should have been responsible offices checking the bill as to how arrears have been building up and corrected the bill without just making a big issue in the news papers. For whose benefit are this kind of news displayed when it's a personal issue. It looks like Electricity Board has not done their job.

Are you givienliving on earth. As general public we were paying our monthly bills in time and avoiding surcharge. If total bill is not paid in stipulated period another surcharge is added on top of earlier surcharge. Shame on you . That's the way bills are calculated. Though you act as you know the difficulties general public are facing day today, it appears you are either ignorant or acting as a innocent soul.

CEB has to pay its bills. So if you live in a fully air conditioned house them you will have a huge bill. To pay Rs 7 million in electricity charges you must be having a big income . So how do you make such a big income from your minister post?

The fluctuations in electricity bill would have attributed when his household started cooking in electricity in the midst of gas explosions orchestrated by Wipath Maga!!!! It does not matter whose name is on the bill the account is being used by his household.

You admit you took residency in 2015. Regardless the name you are responsible for the utility bills. The discrepancy with the CEB should have sorted out long time ago with your caliber.

What is the normal salary of a minister that they have 7 million laying around just for a utility bill. I would like if journalist could inquire to see all the ministers salary details since the rajapaksa government took over, more over would like too even see the rajapaksa banking details and would want the opposition to even audit these people and inquire where and how they get so much money for a life style that accumulates a 7 million electricity bill. If their electricity bill is also 7 million, how much do they spend on their day to day living when a normal citizen cannot even have three meals a day.

If the minister is telling which i can guarantee is not, and if the so called household did have a bill of 12 million, under who’s name is the house and if they can spend 12 million on an electrical bill, would like to see how much to taxes do they contribute to the country or do they just keep taking and taking from the public while the public slaves so the household owner can spend 12 million on an electrical bill.

Forget about he’s a minister. For any citizen, trying to get something done from CEB or Water Board is like getting a star from the sky. They don’t even care they are getting paid for providing services to citizens. It’s so difficult to even dispute a charge. Problem is with these government educated government servants. They use our money to get a degree, we pay them for their employment (yes, they don’t pay any tax) and then waste their time.

Keheliya already said that media should be the mouth piece of government and this is what he meant. Face saving propaganda, all meter readers are carefully inserting the figures and giving the bill, therefore, any comments contrary to the dues are immaterial. CEB Engineers are educated enough to do the calculations, they are not from Rambukwella jungle.

The onus is on CEB to show the true picture. In whose name is the account..? why the arrears was allowed to build up to around 12 million? Why the CEB is disconnecting the line when the poor persons arrears is only in thousands? What is the government auditors role here?

CEB system of billing should change by implementing a method where if the previous bill is not paid to cut electricity what consumers do is pay a small amount and thereafter like a credit card carry the balance forward
