PHIs slam Govt. for turning ’blind eye’ on Indian variant spread

Despite the Health Ministry stressing that they were on high alert on the spreading of Indian variant in the country, the Public Health Inspectors who are in the field slammed the Government for not paying adequate attention to prevent further spreading.

PHI Union Head Upul Rohana told the Daily Mirror that the Government had not yet orchestrated a proper plan to combat against the dreaded Indian variant, known as the Delta.

“What is happening right now is that the Government is continuing with the action plan that they have been following since the beginning of the outbreak. There should be a new action plan to counter this situation,“ he said.

“It is really important to conduct proper research and surveillance to determine whether the Indian variant, which has already spread in several areas, has spread to more areas in the country,” he underlined.

“If no proper action plan in place, Sri Lanka would soon experience what India had to experience a few weeks ago. A larger havoc would be inevitable if the Government does not take the situation more seriously,” he emphasized.

Meanwhile, the PHIU Head said the people’s behaviour in the last few days was extremely disappointing and poor.

“People are behaving as if the risk of COVID-19 has disappeared from the society. The danger remains still active and the people can’t take it for granted,” he added. (Sheain Fernandopulle)
