In a concerning development showcasing the severe shortage of medical specialists, it has been revealed that six out of the eleven Paediatric Cardiologists have migrated sparking grave concerns over the management of Paediatric Cardiology services, Daily Mirror learns.
According to reliable sources, the standard number of fully qualified Pediatric Cardiologists should be twenty. However, the current count stands at only eleven, with six of them having migrated.
Presently, there are only five fully qualified Paediatric Cardiologists available at Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children (LRH), Sirimavo Bandaranayake Specialized Children's Hospital, Jaffna Teaching Hospital, and the Teaching Hospital Kurunegala.
A senior Paediatric Cardiologist told Daily Mirror that this shortage has led to an increase in the number of children being sent to LRH for further treatment.
“While it is normal for children to be referred to LRH, the recent rise in numbers can possibly be attributed to the shortage of specialists, the health expert added.
Out of the four Paediatric Cardiologists at LRH, two have also migrated, further exacerbating concerns regarding the management of cardiology services.
The health authorities are grappling with an array of issues related to the health sector with the dearth of medical specialists being a prominent issue. At present, the issue is being addressed; however, according to health authorities, the matter requires at least three more years to be fully sorted.

The Health Ministry is not willing to have foreign specialist, unless the ministry officials are bribed there is no way that minsitry can accept foreign specialists. The situation is also same with medicine.

The stupid and destructive JVP who for decades prevented setting up of private medical colleges and universities, must also be held accountable for this dearth of doctors. Now they are meddling in the health sector once again to discredit the govt but what us actually happening is our citizens are panicking. This country always ran the health sector with a dismal LKR 2,300 (USD7.oo) per patient shoe steing budget and managed to have a life expectancy rate of 82 years and a very low infant mortality rate. As a nation we must look down with disdain on negative attitudes of these self serving doctors

Voting with their feet. This is exactly the way to treat a wretched regime, hellbent on imposing dictatorial rule on the people, suppressing their democratic rights by use of armed forces and treating professionals like dud currency. Let all who can leave this country leave as soon as possible and let the mynahs, elephants and kaputas and their stooges manage everything, even the health services. This is the general opinion of the public.

Health authority must look this issue seriously and act. GMOA may protest to bring foreign consultant on a short term basis. On the best interest of the public it should be done. If the. Work load is increased the remaing also will leave.

Doctors are underpaid in SL, remember this before accusing Saturday, 19 August 2023 08:14 PM
People with this sort of attitude towards doctors are quite abundant in SL, so they deserve this consequence. May doctors leave more and more so that this jealous mindset will learn a lesson.

We must employ more Russian qualified doctors. I admit they are not very good but this is the only option we have. In our current situation, if they can differentiate between a kidney and heart they are fit for duty.

Commitment is more , yet doctors are underpaid Saturday, 19 August 2023 08:19 PM
Rather doctors need a better salaries. Their commitment is quite more than university lecturers, lawyers. But compared to them the salary is quite low and even a senior doctor receives a lower salary than a lecturer or lawyer( who is mostly of no much use to the citizens as lying is a part of their duty). All the developed countries pay doctors the biggest salary

@ Jude ; Keep dreaming that quality foreign doctors will want to leave their jobs abroad and come to a bankrupt country to work, when the ones here are leaving because of the poor pay. There is a huge global demand for healthcare workers and the only way we can attract them is through a competitive offer.

@ PASP Perera; How many doctors do you know who migrated but later returned. That’s right. No one. Also, doctors pay taxes too. Just about the same amount spent on education is collected as taxes when they buy their first car.

KP Saturday, 19 August 2023 12:13 PM
@ Graduate; The doctors leaving will easily pay the bond money that was spent on their education, which is about one months doctors salary in Europe. Will that solve the problem? What are you going to do with that money? Distribute among people for obituary expenses?

A few yyears back. Doctors had to pay max 12percentage of tax, but now it has gone to more than one third of earnings. Thats for no better facility or quality of life. They have to waste their precious time and energy till mid night to get that extra to the tax. No family life or future for their loved ones. Where do you get Dollars for foreign specialists. Who would come to a failed state.

What caused the exodus substantial number of Professionals and technocrats? It is the total collapse of the Economy and its fallout on Educational Systems and Social Systems and the Rest. Way out is a total Political System Change. Rid the Nation of All Powerful Executive Presidential System, rid the nation of a Hybrid Electoral System. Think - Ponder for a better tomorrow.

The Doctors should be given their MBBS Certificates when they reach 60 years. They have forgotten how they were educated, from tax payers’ money. ie., Poor people who paid taxes when they purchased Sugar or Dhall. Now they refuse to pay taxes from their fat wage packets.

We should look at the broader picture here, which includes public suffering due to the unavailability of an adequate number of professionals and why most professionals leave the country. A recent study found that 50% of all doctors, engineers, accountants, bankers, university lecturers, etc. planning to go sometime in future.

This is the result of teaching wrong subjects at SL universities. Change the SL education system. Stop admitting truck load of Arts students to universities. All they do is protests and ask for government jobs after graduation. Who wants to give jobs to graduates who have studied Buddhist civilisation, sociology, Sinhala, history, Hindi, Pali? Educate more students in STEM fields, including doctors. BTW, why is the government then encouraging other SL workers to go to Korea, Middle East and others? Don't they then end up earning more than SL doctors?

Sri Lanka has one of the best educational systems in the world. Unfortunately, because of 30 years of Tamil Tiger terrorism, the economy took a massive hit, climaxing in the near total drain of foreign exchange reserves. It will take time to recover but well-educated professionals should not panic and run overseas.
